Herbert willed his eyes open. Without his glasses, his vision was slightly blurred, but he could still make out the achingly fond smile on Dan’s face. “I’m awake.”
“Barely,” Dan laughed, but he was cut off by a yawn.
Herbert yawned in kind. Afterwards, they both looked at each other, fondness blooming from the inside out, warmer than the burning water that pounded them both. Once Herbert had accepted he would be forced to rest, he’d always let the exhaustion consume him and allow it to show. Herbert reached up and tapped the back of Dan’s neck. Dan leaned forward, letting Herbert reach to wash his hair in return. Dan always felt slightly honored whenever Herbert deigned to return the intimacy Dan offered.
As they stood there, the streaks of blood that had splattered their bodies where the scrubs did not cover ran down their legs and turned the water at their feet a light pink, slowly swirling down the drain.
Herbert and Dan have been up working for 26 hours. Finally, they go to bed.

Herbert has the house to himself. Dan had received a call that a distant relative died and left him everything, so he left for a week to take care of it. Since Herbert and Dan met 5 years ago, they have never gone more than a day without seeing each other. In fact, they’re so close, it had driven them to insanity multiple times; the only thing worse than that is being apart.
About a week. 7.37 days. 177 hours. 10,620 minutes. 637,200 seconds. But it’s not like Herbert’s counting.

The government would be too if they didn't know any better.
So Jay proposes he could take a day off. It's fall. It's a beautiful day. They've been cooped up for too long. Wouldn't it be nice to go to a pumpkin patch and pretend to be one of the thousands of couples that think fall is THEIR thing and NO ONE ELSE'S?

He expertly dodges Maverick's kick and rests his hand briefly on his partner's knee. Rooster's dad had stuck with the all-natural look, and at the tender age of forty-five, he's gone half-grey. Maverick on the other hand, doesn't have a single white hair on his uniformly dark head. Rooster suspects he may be using hair dye but has yet to turn up concrete evidence to support his theory.
