Why was he doing this? Why was he here, at Herbert’s house, on the outskirts of Arkham, with Herbert’s daughter, preparing to experiment in his laboratory? It had been well over twenty years since they had last seen each other, since they were last crushed by the ceiling of their basement and the neighboring underground crypt of the cemetery, since they had last experimented with the power of God and reanimated the dead—together.

There is now an extension of Herbert West in this world, and after she reunites her father with his former laboratory partner, they waste no time in getting right back to work.

“It’s just a watch, Herbert. It can be replaced. Is this what you’ve been doing after getting off of work early? I thought you’d have jumped at your early schedule for today and taken the opportunity to, oh, I don’t know, doodle with body parts or something.”
“It’s not just a watch, Daniel. This watch was a gift from Dr. Gruber—as a matter of fact, this is all I have left of him, besides his notes and his work,” stated Herbert, rather sternly. His countenance shifted the smallest bit. “And I would be ‘doodling with body parts’ if I had a watch to monitor time with. You know, to monitor when bodies come back to life ‘or something.’”

Herbert willed his eyes open. Without his glasses, his vision was slightly blurred, but he could still make out the achingly fond smile on Dan’s face. “I’m awake.”
“Barely,” Dan laughed, but he was cut off by a yawn.
Herbert yawned in kind. Afterwards, they both looked at each other, fondness blooming from the inside out, warmer than the burning water that pounded them both. Once Herbert had accepted he would be forced to rest, he’d always let the exhaustion consume him and allow it to show. Herbert reached up and tapped the back of Dan’s neck. Dan leaned forward, letting Herbert reach to wash his hair in return. Dan always felt slightly honored whenever Herbert deigned to return the intimacy Dan offered.
As they stood there, the streaks of blood that had splattered their bodies where the scrubs did not cover ran down their legs and turned the water at their feet a light pink, slowly swirling down the drain.
Herbert and Dan have been up working for 26 hours. Finally, they go to bed.

Summary
Herbert has the house to himself. Dan had received a call that a distant relative died and left him everything, so he left for a week to take care of it. Since Herbert and Dan met 5 years ago, they have never gone more than a day without seeing each other. In fact, they’re so close, it had driven them to insanity multiple times; the only thing worse than that is being apart.
About a week. 7.37 days. 177 hours. 10,620 minutes. 637,200 seconds. But it’s not like Herbert’s counting.
