It’s casual and normal, the way she lightly catches his wrist as he drops a heavy file folder on the table and turns away to scurry off. Riz, at least, has the decency to look moderately ashamed.
“No hug?” Sklonda asks with a raised eyebrow. “No coffee? No snooping around my office? I’d think my own son hates me.”
That’s about when she realizes that something is off.

She’s so busy, is the thing. Adaine’s always been so busy with school, adventures, and whatever else she’s got going on that she hadn’t noticed. She hadn’t noticed the ache that lingered after a Healing Word, the exhaustion that pulled on her bones and sinew every time she dragged herself out of bed. She’d explained away the headaches, the nosebleeds, the bruises, the lack of appetite. In her life, each one of those symptoms could be ascribed to any number of things.
She’s so busy.
By the time Sandra Lynn suggests she see a doctor, it’s too late.

The Codfather’s loose shirt is gone now, and while Scott certainly hadn’t expected that level of muscle definition, that isn’t what he’s focused on. Jimmy’s torso is littered with scars. They’re all over, some large and others tiny, some an aged white and others a shiny red. He gapes at them, confused—what had happened? Is the sea really that dangerous? He knows Jimmy’s clumsy, does it justify this?
“What happened to you?” he blurts out, and Jimmy turns to him, face a picture of confusion, before his eyes follow Scott’s gaze. Comprehension dawns and his face closes off.
“You know how it is,” he says coolly, and Scott is pretty sure he does not, in fact, know how it is.

Summary
It’s a nice night. The sky’s clear, the temperature mild, the stars out in their glittering droves. The moon is… big.
Very big, Frighteningly big, actually. Scar’s trying not to think about it. The others have built a variety of things – an observatory, a religion, a panic bunker, a frankly absurd amount of explosives – in an attempt to deal with it but, in Scar’s opinion, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of good old-fashioned denial.
It’s definitely not the worry that’s keeping him up. It’s not.
