There was no second shadow on the floor beside his own to confirm this, but if he kept his focus on the street ahead and carefully avoided trying to look to his left, he could consistently make out black hair swishing in the wind and strong arms leading to hands sunk in pants’ pockets. The edges were blurry, but there was definitely someone at his side.

There's nothing all that special about Kinshirou and Atsushi. They're privileged boys from good families, well-mannered and clever, but there are plenty of teenagers like that in Japan. Still, they're happy together, and happy with their lives, and there's no reason to think anything might change for them.
Certainly there's no reason to imagine that Yufuin, the lazy boy in the back row of their class, has ever been anything more to them than a classmate, someone to chat with or lecture about uniform standards. But even if they don't remember him, En will protect them, no matter what it takes.
