“Uh…hey Chief,” Tian greets nervously.
Phupha huffs, feigning annoyance as he alway did when Tian used that tone that told him he was about to hear some ridiculous excuse as to why he was running late. “Where are you? You were supposed to be back by lunch.”
“Yeah…about that…um…can you come and get me? I’m at the hospital.”
Phupha’s blood runs cold at that last word. “Hospital?”

Tian opens his mouth to say something, but Phupha is quicker to place a placating kiss on his hand. “Tian, please let me stay home with you. They can reach me anytime, I promise.” He nods to the walkie talkie on the bedside table. “They’ll do fine without me. It’s just basic drills today.”
“But it’s still important,” Tian says, then sneezes pathetically.
Phupha presses Tian’s palm against his cheek and nuzzles it, trying to transfer the fever to himself, if only it’s possible. “You are also important.”

"Phupha’s fingers on Tian’s face stop moving. He wants to tell him that if he had a say, nothing would stop him from finding his way back to Tian. Each night, if he had to, he would drag his corpse across fields to sleep again within the warmth of Tian’s embrace. His judgment and reason tell him that these promises are hollow. They are bound to hurt Tian one day. Yet, last night, Phupha took up arms for a battle he thought he had left behind. He should have been done fighting his own desires a lifetime ago, when he watched Tian leave Thailand."

He stops. Takes in the fresh coat of green paint on the door, partially hidden by the thick ivy that covers the side of the shop and spills over the wood trim around the entrance, trailing all the way down to the small stone step in front of it. Looks at the window frame that juts out from the old stone walls, how the shop curves around the corner and sits squint, accommodating the steepness of the hill. The door is closed to keep in the cold, but Markus can see a soft golden light through the window, can see movement through flowers and succulents neatly stacked just inside the display. He ducks his head, peers through the greenery, and at the back he catches a quick flash of blonde hair.
Markus is looking for inspiration surrounding flowers. He finds Simon.
