It’s the first sliver of awareness that comes back to him, the first thing his body (his body?) is acutely, pointedly, intimately aware of.
He’s cold. He’s freezing, feels it in his bones and in his soul like he was remade around it, created just to house this yawning, icy chasm that’s cracked open inside of him.
He thinks, distantly, he might’ve been. He remembers fear and grief and blinding, agonizing pain, and then nothing at all— a void of absolute nothingness swallowing him whole.

Or, Ethan saves his daughter. He doesn’t quite manage to save himself. Somehow, he comes back anyway.

Then learning you were working as a dispatcher." His voice is suddenly a lot closer, dipping into something carefully neutral, "You're so small, now, bluejay."
