    Summary

“... I haven’t seen any sign of Kuutar,” Lauma spoke softly while she spooned stew into three bowls. She handed them out, and Flins took his, relishing the warmth that seeped through the carved wood and into his hands as he held it. “I’m not sure why you’re here, Flins. I… I don’t think she’ll return for quite some time.”

“Don’t lose faith, Lady Moon Chanter. What would the others think if they heard you say such a thing? Besides, there’s no harm in seeing for myself while also stopping in to see a dear friend,” Flins reassured. He felt no hope even in his own words, however. If Lauma was giving up, shouldn’t he? But still, that feeling was there, the need to see the Moonfall Silver moon for himself.

    Summary

“Worry not, worry not,” Dori repeats, leaning across the table to pat him on the arm. “This one is on sale too, but I really, really, really cannot go below forty-eight thousand.”

    “...Not even forty-five thousand?”

Dori shakes her head, emanating sheer, pure regret. “I’m afraid not.”

Varka considers it. Truly, he does. He thinks about his personal finances, about the scolding he’ll get from Jean for spending such exorbitant amounts of Mora. He thinks about Rosaria and Razor, then about Flins, then about all of them together, sitting in a loose circle by Varka’s side and drinking some sort of cider, perhaps playing that card game he keeps hearing so much about.

In the end, he sighs, then reaches into his pocket, grasping a wallet that would scream if it had a mouth.

Or: Desperate to make sure introducing his partner to his children goes smoothly, Varka purchases yet another guide from Dori. Aided by the expert advice of an ancient text he spent forty-eight thousand mora on, he plays tour guide, bonds with his children, and maybe even earns himself a little reward for all that hard work.

    Summary

“Right. So, uh, how much are you asking for this thing? This book of yours.”

Dori leans back in, her grin widening to reveal sharp teeth. “Oh, I thought you’d never ask, Grandmaster!” she purrs, each word as sweet as honey taken straight from the comb. “Why, it’s only fifty thousand mora.”

Varka doesn’t quite choke on his own saliva, but it’s a close thing. “Fifty what now?”

“Oh, don’t be like that,” Dori scolds with a shake of her head. “Anyone else would be asking for much more – it’s not every day you stumble upon a book this old and this useful too! A guide to courting for, ah, individuals specific to Nod-Krai and Snezhnaya? It’s practically a trove of information, Sir Varka! Really now, it’s only because you’re my most loyal, most esteemed, most valuable customer that I can afford naming such a low price.”

Or: Varka gets swindled into buying a Fae courting guide, written by a human for other humans. He's also forced to come to terms with his own feelings regarding a certain Lightkeeper (who might or might not be Fae). Shenanigans ensue as he attempts to follow this dubious yet somehow effective guide to the very end.

    ...and nor is a friend.

Even if the Heretic of the False Moon is no more, there are always more like Dottore in this world. Those so obsessed with power and progress that they find it worth the price of just a single measly human.

Or in this case, a very fascinating non-human.

There is a reason Flins is secretive about his past, but when precautions fail, he finds the reminder that he is never truly alone.
