'The thing is, in hindsight it should have been obvious that Charles is madly in love with Edwin, and has been probably since that first night. The slightest brush of their hands makes Charles feel more than he’s ever felt with Crystal or any other girl, as much as he’d thought he’d loved them. For years he’d written it off as simply a normal reaction to the one thing he could feel in a world of non-sensation, more intense than anything he’d known in life because of the contrast with the bland sameness of every other touch. He’d thought his assessment of Edwin as probably the most gorgeous person to ever exist the objective evaluation of another guy, just as he’d always justified his noticing of other boys in the changing rooms at school as simply standard male competitiveness.
Then Edwin had told him he was in love with him, his eyes wide and wet, his hair disarrayed, stripped down and vulnerable in a way Charles had never seen him before. And, well. Denial and repression can only take you so far.'

Maybe the uniform was scandalous. Maybe it attracted the attention of alphas. Maybe Steve was having a little more fun with it than he probably should have... The merman doesn't make a sound, but as Eddie cuts away more and more of the net, he seems to relax a tiny bit. Those sharp eyes never leave Eddie's though.
"My name's Eddie. Do you have a name?"
No reply.
"Your scales are…really pretty," Eddie continues. "I bet they shine in the sun."
At that, a small noise escapes the merman, a quiet trill.
"Oh? You like compliments, huh?" Eddie smiles. "So you can understand me."
"Some," the merman croaks. Weakly, he holds up a hand, brings his thumb and forefinger less than an inch apart, indicating small.

To most people, merfolk are dangerous beasts, evil, hunted down and their scales sold for high prices. To Eddie, they're kind and fascinating creatures from his uncle's old stories, and something he's longed to see for years.
When Captain Creel drags a captured merman on board Eddie's ship, he gets his wish.
Steve is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and Eddie's going to free him or die trying.
