Most of the people on Earth died, but among those lucky few survivors, there were two possible fates: gaining incredible, other-worldly abilities or succumbing to a terrible transformation process that suppressed all rational thought. Peter fell into the former category, though you might not know it from how his appearance had shifted quite firmly into 'monstrous' territory. He can't live among the other humans, but that doesn't stop him from trying to save as many lives as he can.
