Steve falls from the Helicarrier only to wake up, severely injured, to the realization that the Winter Soldier has absconded him away to an abandoned Hydra facility. He doesn’t know why the Soldier rescued him from the Potomac, or why his masked captor treats him as anything but a captive, as he undertakes the task of nursing Steve back to health. He also doesn’t know why certain things the Soldier does resurrect echoes of a man long-dead. Echoes that make Steve’s heart ache with grief.

Steve didn’t mean for it to happen. It just did. One minute, he was lying there, feeling nothing but love and pleasure and then he had to go and open his damn mouth. Why? Why? Steve stilled and squeezed his eyes shut, if he opened his eyes and saw disgust on Bucky’s face, or worse felt him withdrawing from him, he’d be torn, ripped apart.

Steve chewed the inside of his cheek, trying to ignore how soft and comforting Bucky’s dry lips felt tracing up and down his shoulder, his neck. He knew he should talk about this, get everything out so he didn’t start resenting Bucky’s relationship with their daughter, but Steve Rogers was nothing if not stubborn. He wanted to bite his tongue, keep his back to his husband and shut him out for no reason other than being annoyed at him.
“Do you know what it feels like to have no control over something? To know something’s your fault and you just have to sit back and watch the consequences of your actions just roll through and be completely powerless to stopping them?”
Bucky paused, his lips stilling on Steve’s arms, his entire body tensing.
“You know that I do,” he said, so softly even Steve’s enhanced ears barely heard him.Or the one where Steve blames himself for his daughter's health problems. Bucky helps him feel better with his body and words. Steve shows his appreciation by destroying their bed. In a good way.
