Summary
A warring states period has recently ended and peace between various cultivation sects, human royalty, and the demonic realm is tenuous at best. Lan Wangji continues to watch him.
Lan Xichen, noticing, laughs. It’s a little forced. “See, what a silly elder brother you have, Didi. Aren’t you sorry you asked?”
Lan Wangji frowns, glances down at the reports he’s been working on, then at the correspondence on Lan Xichen’s desk. Revised study plans, resource allocations, proposed trade agreements… He comes to a decision and stands up, startling Lan Xichen.
“Wangji?”
Lan Wangji walks around the low table and comes toward him, extending his hand.
Lan Xichen takes it immediately, even as he blinks in confusion, and allows his brother to pull him to his feet as well.
“Wangji?”
“Let’s go.” He tugs, turning to leave.
Lan Xichen, however, tugs back, halting him. “Go where?”
Lan Wangji looks at him, as if he’s being slow. “Play,” he says. “Explore the world. Together.”
Lan Xichen blinks some more. Finally, it dawns. “You…” A slow, delighted smile stretches his lips. “Wangji, you want to go on a playdate?”
“Mn,” Lan Wangji confirms impatiently. Words, words, words, what is there to talk about?
“Wangji!” Lan Xichen laughs. “It’s a sweet thought, Didi, but there’s work, and the children, I can’t just—”
Lan Wangji, uncharacteristically, interrupts him. “The children are looked after. There is nothing here that can’t wait a day. Tell me I’m wrong.”
> “Young Master Wei is a very spirited young man,” Lan Xichen says with a smile that is disconcertingly knowing. “I can see how one would be drawn to him.”
Xiao Yanyi almost regrets rescuing him.
