There was no reaction. Perhaps he hadn’t been heard.
“Combeferre!”
That time, Combeferre turned to look at him, began to stand again. Enjolras watched as time seemed to slow. A man emerged from the cloud of smoke, brandishing his bayonet. Enjolras dropped his rifle, which he hadn’t quite finished reloading, and grabbed his pistol. He was a second too late to stop the enemy from plunging the bayonet into Combeferre’s chest.Things go just differently enough that some of them live. Enjolras completes a transformation.
