It’s no longer a fierce, stabbing pain, just a kind of endless ache that surges and subsides with every breath they take. After all their efforts, they failed. The story of the Skai Kru would die with them. “We’re the last of our people.”
Bellamy finally looks up at her tone of voice and after a pause he says, slowly, “We don’t have to be.”

Summary
At first she can't blame him. He'd had a few years of peace, and then a few years of imprisonment. Being thrown from either into a war zone once again is enough to make any of them tense. But it would be nice if he would acknowledge that this is the first time he's seen her in six years. Even if he didn't miss her like she missed him, he could pretend to be glad she survived.

Clarke frowned at the notification on her ipad. “Why does your history teacher want to meet with me?” she asked, but Madi kept her eyes innocently on her homework.
A little too innocently.
“Mr. Blake’s a hardass,” Madi said with a shrug.
“A hardass who wants a meeting with me barely a month into the school year?” Clarke asked. Madi shrugged again and Clarke narrowed her eyes and scanned the email. “He’s worried about your performance already. Have you even had any tests? What am I missing?”
“He just doesn’t like me,” Madi replied and erased something on her worksheet.

She would often find scratches on her hands that didn't sting when she touched them, or erratic bursts of blue that stretched down her arms like stepping stones. Sometimes they took up half her body, and were heavy and dark like the paint her father made for her with warm oil and sticks of pigmented wax, and she would ask her parents to pray with her for the stranger on the other side.
As she got older she stopped praying, but she never stopped worrying.
