“Sometimes, I wish he was a worse person,” Ilya admits one night, while he and Yuna are doing the dishes. Shane and Ilya had come over for chicken parmesan, and it had been a lovely dinner, right up until David, clearing the plates, mentioned that he had met a guy at the store the other day who was a big fan of Shane’s, had a kid who idolized him.
David asked if Shane could sign a piece of merchandise for him, maybe record a video. Shane said yes, because he had a rule, about doing things for child fans. Now, Shane was off shooting a video while Ilya did the dishes, and Ilya already knew the way it would require Shane to drag his public face up from the depths of his stomach, the work it would take him to shed it afterwards, the way it would taint this evening.

But back at the museum, the rage was rolling off him in waves; the pace of his predatory gait quickened and the shots he fired frantic and fast and uncalculated.
There’s something about his anger and the way he pressed his body against her, arm wound-tight around her waist, that keeps playing around in her mind. Widowmaker slides her hand up her sleeping shirt and slowly starts to rub her right hipbone, where Reaper’s body heat seems to linger, like an iron branded into her skin.
It was almost like he would’ve turned violent on her, because the anger was there, simmering under the surface.Her heartrate’s still off, a ¾ beat too fast. She remembers his too-tense posture, his too-straight spine and his arm muscles straining under the tight kevlar of his uniform. Widowmaker slowly thumbs the band of her pajama bottoms, inches it down the crook of her thigh.

He reaches blindly for his shotguns under the bed with one hand, wants to have his fingertips bump against the stock or the barrel of one of them, to be reassured by the knowledge of having them close-by.
There’s a blue mosquito light plugged into the socket near the bathroom and its glow seems to drag on towards his side of the bed, highlights the several blood stains on the floorboards that the cleaning lady couldn’t get out.
His hand and wrist are caught in the light, the pale scar tissue there discolored, blessed silver.
Eventually, he rolls over on his left side and traps some of Widowmaker’s long tresses underneath his elbow. She groans lowly, shifts until her knees are pulled up under her torso and takes part of the sheets along her, exposing his right side.
“Get off.” It’s a whisper, in a hoarse, gravel and wine voice; the soles of her feet flat against his shins, pushing.But he doesn’t budge, only presses the sharp joint of his elbow down onto her hair and makes the mattress dip—until she feels it in the roots of her hair, hisses and turns onto her back, cranes her neck to peer at him with half-hooded angry eyes.
