    Summary

“No vodka?” Rozanov asks, tsking in disapproval but looking amused. “What then? What does the great Shane Hollander want when he does a good job? What is your vice, Hollander?”

“Hmmmm, mangoes,” Shane sighs out wistfully. It’s not a dangerous allergy for him, but it does mean being itchy and sometimes a little queasy for a couple of days after. Really he knows that he should probably avoid them altogether, but with every other restriction he has and with how controlled he is with his life even outside of that, it’s his one little indulgence, a pressure-relief valve of one bad choice to let some steam off at the end of a season, when he carves out time in his cottage when he can make his annual bad choice and enjoy a few days of wild mango madness before he makes himself buckle back into the restraints he usually keeps his life in.

He looks up when he hears Rozanov snort.

“Mangoes?” Rozanov repeats, tugging his shirt over his head. “Really?”

“They’re good,” Shane defends. “Better than vodka,” he adds, pointedly.

“But,” Ilya says, “no more, yes? No more sex mangoes.”

Shane is quiet for what is probably just a moment too long, wondering if he should go ahead and differentiate between sex mangoes and End of Season Celebratory Bad Choice Mangoes. He has the sneaking suspicion Ilya isn’t going to be too pleased by the distinction.

“Shane?” Ilya prompts, sounding a little less indulgent now. “No more mangoes, yes?”

“No more sex mangoes,” he agrees, which is something he can promise. It’s not a good idea during the season, after all, so it’s not a bad idea to have the temptation off the table now.

…his annual Mango Time on the other hand…

    Summary

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.

But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.

(how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)

“I said I don’t eat peanuts,” Shane points out. “And I asked you not to eat it then.”

“You did not tell me why!” Ilya says. “I thought it was just-” A flick of his hand in Shane’s general direction. “Hollander thing. Like how-” He stops short, eyes narrowing. “The condoms.”

“Yes?” Shane prompts, a little thrown.

“You always bring yours and refuse to use other ones. Is allergy thing?”

“Yeah,” Shane says with a shrug. “I’m allergic to latex.”

Ilya closes his eyes like he’s praying and folds forward, pressing his hands to his face for a moment. When he speaks, he looks up at Shane from over his fingers.

“And you did not think to mention this? At any point? In literally fucking years of knowing each other? ‘Hey, Rozanov, by the way, there are many things that can kill me. You should know about them, maybe.’”

Well…when he says it like that.

Kip texts him, Scott sent me that interview and was like ‘is he talking about your friend Shane’ which is how I found out you're a whore again. Shane parses it for bitterness for a little while, but eventually decides that there isn't any.

Loan free, baby, he texts back, and smiles to himself at the long string of angry emojis followed by the even longer string of laughing emojis he receives in reply.

To know that Ilya feels it too, here in this dimly lit bathroom at the end of a beautiful, sun-drenched day in the middle of a glorious, stolen summer: the two of them, who were supposed to be alone, summiting the mountain together, taking turns holding out a hand so the other can keep climbing.

    Summary

“You have a ride back home, right? Please tell me you aren’t going to drive. You’ll crash one of your stupid sports cars and get a concussion. Or die.”

“Awe, so sweet to me, worrying. But no, I am in Moscow. I have no good cars here, only shitty Marussia B2. Stupid purchase. You know, the B2 is just B1 but with fancier clothes? Look better than B1, though. B1 look like low-money 80’s future movie.” He makes an annoyed sound. “No. I do not have word. научная фантастика. What is movie type that has flying cars?”

“Jesus,” Shane says, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you talk so much.”

“You like my voice, da? So is no problem, for you.”

“Fuck you. Do you mean sci-fi?”

Rozanov makes a triumphant sound. “Yes, that! Sci-fi. B1 look like that meme of a cat’s face covered in cream. Ugly car. So, at least I have better choice. I can look at it and not wish to drive it off cliff and into garbage land.”

    “...You’re thinking of a landfill.”

Or, Ilya keeps calling Shane at odd hours to talk about nothing and everything. Shane, for some reason he can’t quite rationalize, keeps answering. And texting. And then things get a bit out of hand.

Even though he makes fun of Shane for being slow or having a weak backhand, Shane knows he’s just being a humorous dickhead on purpose. Shane pretends to be offended, if only to delight Ilya further, but each time Shane secretly thinks it’s very funny. Shane is one of two players in the NHL — the other, of course, being Ilya himself — who have a yearly scoring race so intense that it’s covered by sports media in its own segment separate from everyone else’s, and Ilya says Shane’s bad at hockey.

    That’s fucking hilarious.
