Summary
Phil's only been home from the military three weeks when 19 year old bad boy Clint Barton gets dumped on his parents' doorstep – their latest rehabilitation project and the youngest thus far. He'd known the kid was coming but resents his arrival all the same, the upset to Phil's routine and his continuing readjustment to civilian life. Honorably discharged after falling victim to a roadside bomb, he's come back to the Circle C Ranch with every intention of taking full ownership so that his parents can have the retirement they deserve. He'll be damned if some punk city kid screws up those plans, no matter how pretty he is.

Natasha froze. For a split second it seemed like the ice was hesitating, like it hadn’t made up its mind whether to hold or break. Then it gave another a wet crunch, and with a desperate sound Clint heaved himself towards her as it disintegrated under him. But he was too far away, and his fingertips scrabbled uselessly against hers. Then he was in the water again. Under the surface again. And this time he didn’t resurface.

Natasha is of the opinion that one should try to avoid falling through the ice. Especially when the ambient temperature has plummeted well below freezing. And there's nowhere around to get warm and dry. And the water turns into a whitewater rapid a stone’s throw downstream. It's just common sense.
In Clint's defense, he was dodging a bullet.

Bucky makes a rude noise as he unzips Clint’s tac jacket and reveals the bruises and welts along his ribcage. “Jeez, Barton, what’d you get into this time?”
“Eh, nothing too serious.” Clint tugs his arms out of the sleeves and hisses as his injuries pull and burn from the movement. Barnes’ eyes skim down Clint’s arms to his wrists, but he reserves comment.
Bucky gently rotates Clint around and scoffs when he sees the additional bruising on his back. “I sometimes wonder what exactly ‘serious’ would look like to you.”

Summary
It's not sudden. It's gradual and sneaky and utterly fucking treacherous, like that thing with the frog and the boiling water. Lucky for Rodney, he's not a frog, which is why he eventually gets it, why he eventually notices that the water is getting unpleasant. The worst thing is that he can't even say he feels used, because that would imply he'd entered into this under the belief that something else was being offered. Something more. But he'd known the limitations right from the start, never been under any illusions about what they were doing. Too bad his inner, über-emo teenage girl decided that now would be a good time to kick reason and logic square in the head and stake claim on his life.

Or, back to back missions with a cold turning worse are a bad idea, probably, but Clint's never been awesome with self-preservation. Phil's better at it.
