    Scaramouche lived in a small, plant-filled apartment with his aunt, Nahida. While she was a brilliant researcher who often lost track of time surrounded by her books, Scaramouche was simply a creature of spite and late-night gaming. He consistently rolled into the classroom at 7:59 AM, his tie loose and his expression a permanent scowl.

    For the first week, he was stuck in the "dead zones"—the front row right under the teacher's spit-zone, or squashed between the loud-mouthed athletic club members in the back.

    However, starting on Monday of the second week, something shifted.

    The classroom was notoriously packed, yet the seat in the far back corner by the window—the "Protagonist Seat"—was inexplicably empty. It was the best seat in the house: a view of the cherry blossoms, a breeze to keep the stuffy room bearable, and far enough from the chalkboard to nap unnoticed.

    Scaramouche eyed it suspiciously. "Who died?" he muttered, dropping his bag onto the desk.

    "Nobody," whispered Heizou, who sat one row over. "But anyone who tries to sit there usually finds a very polite, very firm note saying it’s 'reserved for a friend of the wind.' Nobody wants to argue with the guy who leaves them."
