Frustration overcame him and Sonic threw his comm back onto the coffee table, not even caring enough to see it land before he closed his eyes. It was not even his real one anyway. He tiredly rubbed one hand across his eyes, feeling bone-tired as his back sunk deeper into the couch.
This whole situation was stressing him out.
Shadow gets turned into an actual hedgehog and Sonic has to deal with it.

The muffled sound of a phone ringing cuts Rouge's lament off. She huffs, feigning irritation at the offending noise, but looks at Shadow expectantly. Shadow grumbles, pulling the phone out of his quills and pressing answer, not bothering to look at the caller ID. Anyone calling him during working hours is very aware of the risks.
"You've reached Shadow," the dark hedgehog drones unenthusiastically. He hears some shuffling on the other side, followed by some deep breaths, then,
"Shadow-?" Tails' meek voice drifts through his speaker, almost too soft to catch. Shadow's previous annoyance disappears instantly as he recognises the kit's voice.

Shadow didn't even realise Sonic was here at first; he had been the last to arrive, and the group was quick to pull him onto the tiny couch, handing him a controller before he had a chance to scan the room. His first thought after not instantly seeing the blue hedgehog was to assume he was on a run, or perhaps he hadn't decided to grace them with his presence today. But no. Sonic was, indeed, in the room. Tucked into the corner armchair, watching his friends play, not saying a word.

They don't realize they’re slowly becoming addicted to the rush of each other’s presence. Sonic laughs it off, Shadow plays it cool, but neither wants to leave.
They don’t need love or promises, they just need each other for a little longer.
