He collided with someone solid.
Coffee sloshed. Paper bags slipped from his grip. The impact jolted him out of his head so fast he barely had time to curse before instinct kicked in.
“Oh-! I’m so sorry- I wasn’t looking, I-!”
Sonic dropped into a crouch immediately, scrambling to catch what he could before it hit the floor. His heart was already racing, embarrassment heating his face. He hated being clumsy in public, the attention, the thought of ruining someone’s evening.
“I’m really sorry,” he repeated, words tumbling over each other. “I wasn’t paying attention, that one’s on me, I swear-”
The response wasn’t sharp or annoyed. It was rather calm.
“It’s fine.”
Sonic froze.
He knew that voice.
He looked up.
Shadow stood there as if he belonged to the quiet center of the room, untouched by the chaos Sonic had brought with him. His coffee cup was tilted slightly, a few dark drops staining the lid, but he didn’t seem bothered by it. He looked… relaxed. Poised deliberately.
Crimson eyes met Sonic’s.
For a second, Sonic forgot how to breathe.

Sonic the Hedgehog has a goal.
It's a goal he's been working towards in secret. The only one that knows why is the person he trusts more than anyone else. If he can keep even one person from experiencing what he did, he's accomplished that goal.
When he learns that G.U.N is going to "rescue" people taken captive by traffickers, people like him, he makes it his mission to get there and truly set them free.
(A rewrite of In the Shadows of Our Sanctum, because that was more of a very rough draft than anything else. The original will stay up for those that enjoyed it!)

Sonic, like anyone else, is simply trying to survive against the evil rule of Emperor Eggman. One fateful day, he is saved by an echidna, a mystical creature, coming from a legendary race often refereed to as gods. He was sent down from Angel Island by Gaia Herself to find the Chaos Emeralds and bring them back to their home on Angel Island where they belong.
Sonic eventually gets roped into helping him.
The Chaos Emeralds were gifted to the Mobians by the echidnas. Once every one is brought together, a miracle could happen, and Sonic could think of no better miracle than the defeat of the evil Emperor Eggman. Unfortunately, the other islands would rather hoard their treasures than share them.Sonic would like to defeat the Cruel Emperor. Knuckles wants to free the Mobians; but overall, the Chaos Emeralds must return home!
Emperor Eggman remains as their one obstacle, sending threat after threattheir way. If the both of them can learn to unite (and maybe even all of Mobius) they’ll be unbeatable!
