“Mm.” He doesn’t press further, doesn’t try to prod her into saying more than she wants to. Instead, he picks up a piece of fishcake, dips it into her winning sauce, and holds it out to her.
“Eat.”
She blinks at him, surprised. “What are you—”
“You like fishcake, don’t you?” he says simply. “Here.”

Before Doyoung could leave, Taeyong found himself moving. He wrapped his hand around Doyoung’s wrist, finding the joint more solid than it looked. Doyoung could be summarised as that: something so beautiful it looked fragile, only to be as unyielding as steel. “Doyoung?”
He glanced down at Taeyong’s grip. “Yes?”
“Do you really have a crush?”
It took another handful of seconds for Doyoung to look up from their hands and meet Taeyong’s eyes. “I wouldn’t call it that, no.”

“I remember,” Taeyong said, knowing that fifty years wouldn’t have been long enough for his feet to forget the way from the bar to Doyoung’s front door, to the bed where they inevitably ended up. Taeyong smiled and pulled Doyoung forward, willing to take the first step. “But we can take our time getting there.”

Like falling in love with your best friend.
But, let’s put it this way: Doyoung has never been very good at following any sort of rules. And really, with someone like Taeyong as his best friend—especially with Taeyong as his one very best friend—how was he ever meant to follow that one in the first place?

The truth was, Doyoung didn't even understand it himself. He and Taeyong had been working together in the KBS control room for over half a year, and there wasn't a person on that team who hadn't witnessed them arguing passionately over the most insignificant things on the planet.
But if one thing was certain, it was that deep down, amidst all the anger they could evoke in each other, they both enjoyed it more than they could imagine.

In college, Doyoung's lack of experience was laid bare; something to set him apart from the constant hookups in his co-ed dorm, the way he walked in on his roommate with a girl not once, not twice, but three times. And while straight was still the default, his classes were filled with people of all genders and sexualities. He didn’t know what was wrong with him, the way his stomach knotted every time he passed a gay bar.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Taeyong, who graduated the year before him, decided to defer until they could start college at the same time, despite being on separate coasts. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Taeyong, despite being the best looking person Doyoung had ever seen, also left high school with nary a girlfriend in sight. Or maybe, it had something to do with the fact that on one night over winter break, Taeyong came out to him and confided that his first boyfriend had treated him poorly. Doyoung hadn’t known what to say, hadn’t known how to possibly grab hold of a single emotion, all of them swirling around his brain all at once. So he said nothing. Taeyong changed the subject. They hadn’t discussed it since.
And now it was summer.
