“Not much of a talker is he,” Tony casually stated, making Peter stomach churn with unease. He had no idea where the man was going with his assessment and wasn’t really sure how to properly defend himself. Thankfully, he didn’t have to.“Peter has what they call selective mutism,” the social worker replied. “So, no. I suppose he’s not much of a talker.”
Tony leaned back in his chair and arched his eyebrow. “He doesn’t talk at all?”
“I’ve been his social worker for six years and I’ve never heard more than a peep out of him,” the social worker said, this time, turning towards Peter to offer him a reassuring smile.

Summary
Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. It starts as a helpful act on Spider Man’s part, because that’s what Spider Man does, doesn’t he? He helps people. It’s his whole MO, whether he’s helping a kid get his cat out of a tree, or helping a lost tourist, or helping someone whose car is getting broken into. So it's just another day on the job when a local restaurant owner asks for his help. It's not long before Peter's enjoying what he's doing though, and hoping Mr. Stark and the other Avengers don't find out about his side hustle.
