Summary
The consequences of heroism vary, from adoration and media coverage to the destruction of property. The less spoken about consequences - the long term injuries - are something that Sonic keeps as hidden as possible, the cards close to his chest.
It takes one wrong move to reveal his secret pain to his rival (crush, but shush Tails, it's not important), and if Sonic could think through the fog, he'd be mortified.
Too bad he can't.

He dropped into a defensive position. A yelp sounded through the darkness and the creature thrashed harder, struggling to make it to shore. As it got closer, Jason could see the outline of a tail.
