Summary
In the city of Saint Marais, strange things don’t exist—at least, not on paper.
Records are clean. Deaths are explainable. The river takes what it takes, and the city looks the other way.But something has begun to move beneath the surface.
A girl is pulled from the bayou with no history, no name, and a body that doesn’t quite behave the way it should. Taken in by a doctor with a reputation that doesn’t survive polite conversation, she is given a place to stay, a set of rules, and a life that almost resembles something ordinary.
Almost.
Because the city listens.
And slowly—quietly—it begins to listen back.
People linger where they shouldn’t. Conversations stretch too long. Eyes follow. Something unseen hums beneath the bones of Saint Marais, threading through its streets, its systems, its carefully maintained lies.
The more the girl tries to exist as something human, the more the city bends around her.
And the more the doctor watches, the more he realizes:
This is not a patient.
This is a signal. And something has started to tune in.
It has no intention of stopping.

Summary
Charlie Magne crawls out of a bayou with too many teeth and no memory of how she got there.
A stranger finds her first.
He shoots her twice.
She follows him home anyway.
She doesn’t know why.
Doctor Alastor Arceneaux runs a quiet clinic in Saint Marais, where bodies are repaired, survival is negotiable, and some things should have stayed dead.
Charlie survives.
That turns out to be the problem.
———-
He squeezes her cheeks once more—light, almost affectionate—and murmurs, soft as poison,
“Tsk. Such poor manners.”
Then he leans in.
Close enough that the heat of his breath ghosts the shell of her ear. Close enough that his voice slips under her skin instead of through it.
“Oh, darling,” he murmurs. “You followed me home.”

Summary
Lakan has no earthly idea what possessed him to come to the garden party, but some star smiled upon him indeed. There is but one living face in the world for Lakan to see and, though she has grown greatly since last he saw her, there is no mistaking his daughter sitting behind the honored consort. It nearly breaks his heart just to see her: in formal garb she looks every inch her mother’s daughter, down to the cunning expression on her face. She looks into her bowl as her mother would look at a gaming table, seeing many moves into the future. So he is not surprised when she announces the meal is poisoned, for he was already out of his chair when she decided to drink it.
How would the story change if Lakan had attended the spring party and seen his daughter in the Rear Palace? How does his persistence change Maomao's view of herself, the world, and her place in it? A story in which Jinshi is not as subtle as he thinks he is, but that's okay because Maomao would rather drink poison than commit a single moment's self-reflection.

Summary
Deep down, Mulder knew that if they were entangled even more tightly, he’d eventually become more irritated than aroused by her voice. He’d hear it in reference to uneaten vegetables and unopened mail and unfolded laundry. That holy righteous rage of hers, that unquenchable fire that roared at him to be better and do better and live better, would illuminate not just his career but the entirety of his being. And he doubted he could live up to that scrutiny. After almost almost getting her killed any number of times, somehow Mulder knew that asking her to forgive more mundane betrayals would be the final straw. Abduction? Possession? Cannibalism? All in a day’s work. Leaving sunflower shells everywhere? That was a bridge too far. It was better, safer, sweeter, kinder to love each other the way they did. To keep some mystery alive, and with it her steadfast belief in him. Delaying consummation was delaying his inevitable disappointment of her.
