As long as the Drifter could remember, she could just barely make out a thin red line of energy stretching out about a foot from her chest. If she looked directly at it, it would disappear, but when she wasn’t paying attention she could just see it at the edge of her vision, like an ethereal tether connecting to nothing.

Summary
While working as a cabin boy for Captain Kolivan, Keith is caught up in a bargain between his boss and the pirate Captain Shirogane. If Kolivan is to live, Keith will have to serve out one year in servitude to Captain Shirogane.
Keith has other plans, however, and if he has his way, their bargain will end in a killing. Nothing could have prepared him for Captain Shirogane wanting to kiss him instead.

“Alright, Kolivan, don’t get your panties all in a twist,” Shirogane said, gaze flicking quickly back to Keith. “You can be quiet can’t you, baby?”
Raising a brow, Keith said, “Only if you ask nicely.”
Shirogane smiled, soft and dangerous. Then he said, “Pretty boy, pretty please, keep that pretty mouth shut so I can gamble with your pissy captain.”

Keith asks this a lot. He knows Shiro doesn’t understand him, but he asks anyway and Shiro seems to like it. Most creatures like to be talked to. Cryptids like Shiro and the others at the facility are no different. The words don’t matter. They respond to Keith's voice, his inflection, his body language. Even if they aren’t intelligent enough to understand what permission is, they trust Keith more for asking for it.
