"Good morning Rocky," I knock on the xenonite tunnel at the foot of my bed where my motionless friend is. He's only sleeping but he looks scarily dead.
Good morning friend Grace, I play his little robot voice in my head.
I cannot wait until he's awake.
My mind's buzzing with so many questions and things I need to share with him. There’s an ache in my chest from how colorless the rich tones of the folk instruments feel today. My fingers twitch and my hands flex as I recall the memory of the heat of a solid claw holding on to me, gently exploring my palm.
Grace wakes up mostly memory-less and alone on the Hail Mary, minus a sleeping Rocky.
(I recommend reading the first part of the AU, but you’ll probably be fine if you don’t.)

"Hmm," I hum as new eyes start to begin to focus on us after Grace mentions marriage so clearly. It's difficult to be upset at them because, to be fair, I did agree to make that stupid secret pact with the rest of the Hail Mary crew that we all wouldn't attempt to initiate a romantic relationship with Grace.
There were two rules of this pact:
1. Don't tell Grace or Stratt about the pact.
2. No romantic interactions with Grace.This includes:...
I didn't read anything past that.
Star Trek AU/Crack where Rocky is ready to make Grace his mate, but this stupid "No Romancing Ryland Grace Pact" is yucking his yum.

I nod. It’d be two hundred years before Earth and Erid would see the real effects of the stars dimming. I’d be long dead. But for the Eridians, that was only a fourth of their life span. Though if everything goes according to plan, we’ll have a solution figured out way before it gets to that point.
A somewhat lighthearted canon divergence where no suicide mission is needed and everyone stays on Earth (for now)

“What are you doing here?” Will asks.
He’s wearing a plain button-up shirt with black slacks and looking very awake. Lion’s shoulders relax, knowing that they didn’t pull Will out of bed. All they want now is to soak up his voice and get a good look at his face to see if it’s as mesmerizing as they’ve built up in their head, but their eyes shy away as soon as they meet Will’s.
“Well, I wanted to talk to you. And you made it very difficult when you left me in the Golden Land,” Lion says, faking their cool.
They’re not sure exactly how long it’s been since Lion’s seen Will, but they’ve been replaying their last moments together in their mind.

Summary
Lion reaches to turn off the lamp, pulling on the short chain one too many times and making the room brighter. They say sorry and take one more look at Will's face.
That’s when they notice how atypically pale he is.
"Are you sick?"
And while that barely gets a raise out of Will, he does make the effort to make eye contact and tell Lion, “No."
The one-word reply is irritating enough that Lion abandons their original plan. Now that Lion's on to something, they have no choice but to force a real answer out of Will.
Will gets sick and fails at hiding it, so Lion (and Diana) take care of him.

“It’ll all take some getting used to, probably, I think,” Colt comments, glancing towards Rocky. He can tell by the way he tilts that Rocky’s looking back at him. This is actually getting normal, God help him. “We can practice more at home.”
“Home,” Ryland echoes, taking his hand off the chair’s controls. “Geez. Home has— You know, home’s been Rocky and the Hail Mary for years now. It’s weird to be on— you know. Dry land.”
“The lonely sailor, lost at sea,” Colt sighs with a slight smile, teasingly dramatic.
“Grace not lonely, Grace not lost!” Rocky protests. “Grace have Rocky, statement! Rocky watch Grace sleep, protect Grace, bring Grace home to Earth.”
“You sure did, buddy, and I can’t thank you enough for it,” Colt replies.
or: Ryland is finally well enough to leave the facility and go home— or, for now, to move himself and Rocky into Colt's home.

“Will you tell me what happened?” Colt asks quietly, studying Ryland’s sleeping face. He wishes he would wake up and just look at him, but— but, until then, he’ll settle for talking to his— to Rocky.
“Grace come back for Rocky after return plan for Earth,” Rocky says. His translated voice feels like it’s coming from right beside him. “Grace not let Rocky die. Grace give life for Rocky life. Grace…” He makes a soft, sad chime of a sound. “Grace save Rocky. Grace save Erid, Grace brave, brave, brave, statement. Rocky love Grace. Rocky save Grace.”
“You did that?” Colt asks him, glancing sideways at Rocky. “You gave up everything, you— you gave up going home just to bring him back here?”
“Grace do same for Rocky.”
or: Colt's twin brother was taken from him and shot off into space without a chance to say goodbye. Over the years, piece by piece, he gets Ryland back.

Having Grace sacrifice himself so many times for Rocky, it was only obvious that Rocky would come to deeply admire and cherish his alien friend. However, he didn't expect how strong would be his feelings. And how disturbing.
After so long away from eridian society, Rocky lets himself feel things he never thought possible.(Or: Rocky finds out he is a freak.)
