Summary
Buck has always been the charismatic, go-getter firefighter with a penchant for making people laugh and jumping headfirst into dangerous situations. Eddie’s makes a couple of incomprehensible sounds as he stares across the street and sees the slice of the harbor between the buildings. But eventually, in the interest of conversation, he asks, “So I’m in this book?”
“Yeah,” Christopher says. “I don’t know all what happened because some of the pages are torn out, but I know you and Buck met and fell in love.”

“Sure.”
“Maybe you’re in love with Buck,” Eddie throws back when he doesn’t get the response he wants. “Ever thought about that?”
“I can confidently say never,” Josh says, indeed confidently. “Can you say the same?”

Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.
But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”

So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.

The first time it happens, Bucky has no idea how to react. He and Steve are walking down the street, when a slight woman takes in Bucky’s terrified eyes, the dark circles so bad they almost look like bruises, and Steve’s protective hand resting on his lower back, guiding him down the busy sidewalk (but it must look possessive, to someone looking for a sign), and comes to the wrong conclusion.
