Two of the brightest minds of their generation never spoke of what they built together in the dark hours of a dying war. They did not speak of it because there was no one to tell, and no language adequate to the telling, and because the work itself — the quiet, impossible, necessary work — was its own kind of covenant. This is the story that happened behind the story everyone knows. The sacrifice no one saw. The debt that was never named.

Hermione’s lips twitched. The dryness of his tone, the way he lingered on the word dark—it was too familiar, too achingly sharp.
“I’ll have you know,” she replied primly, “that trespassing is a time-honoured Hogwarts tradition. And some of us are still clever enough not to get caught.”
