“I was not trying to be subtle,” says Laurent. “If you are implying that I expressed my emotions clearly, then I will take that as a compliment. I don’t respect Damianos’ work because he has shit opinions on food.”
Jord raises an eyebrow.
“Oh,” Laurent says, pausing to take a sip of water, the iced liquid minnowing a sharp trail down his throat, “and he’s also my ex-fiance.”
Damen and Laurent are rival food critics. They're also ex-fiances.

Laurent remembers with prickling clarity the exact way he’d felt his mind shift at the question. "To paint Auguste as a point of comparison appears to me a fruitless measure, especially with the intent to milk his name of pity. I continue to fight his antagonists today.”
“Do you consider Ferrari’s Damianos your brother’s antagonist, or yours?” the interviewer asks on the screen, and Laurent slams shut the computer with one cool flick of the wrist.

On the right, Nicaise absently recognized Damen. He was maybe a few years younger, and a lot more happy. His face was practically glowing in contentment.
