In the wavering torchlight, Daemon could see the bruises plainly: dark finger-shaped marks along her arms, mottled purple shadows down her legs, and even beneath the thin cloth where it stretched across the fragile cage of her ribs.
Too small.
Seven hells, she could hardly be older than five summers.
Something ancient stirred in Daemon’s chest. A strange tightening beneath his ribs, sharp and certain all at once.

Ilya’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. “Hmm. I look forward to chasing you,” he said, but then he grabbed Shane’s hand and kissed it, his fangs leaving little indents on his skin. “But I cannot wait to catch you.”

But Clark’s wolf stood tall and powerful, his fur a molten gold that shimmered like sunlight poured over his back. When he moved, he caught the light like a flame, as if something celestial burned beneath his skin.
His eyes set him apart, too. Bright blue when he was a pup and now a deep, twilight blue, like the first stars emerging at dusk. Martha used to say they looked like the heavens had claimed him before the earth ever could.
Sometimes, Clark wondered if she’d been right. Because no matter how hard he tried, he’d never quite felt like he belonged to the same world as everyone else.

Steve turned to Bucky, who was watching him warily. "I'm sorry," he said.
"You are distressed."
He snorted, covering his face with his hands. Steve rubbed them up and down vigorously before lowering them. "Something like that. Are you okay?"
Bucky leaned back against the wall, his eyes never leaving Steve. "I've always had this feeling," he said slowly. "Magnetic. Pulling me towards something. It's always been there. And then you fell into the Potomac and it went away. That's why I went after you. I just knew.. the feeling was you."
Steve softened, his vision blurring.
"I'm.. yours?"
It hit Steve that he really should have listened to what Bruce had told him, and he made a mental note to ask JARVIS to pull up the conversation later. "You are yours, Buck. You belong to yourself first. We can worry about the rest later."
OR
Steve and Bucky bond in 1942 but the serum messes with it, resulting in misunderstandings and a ton of heartache.
