Summary
“Hey,” Buck says, in the hospital room after it’s all over. “Just so you know, I’m in love with you.”
His voice is raspy, his smile a little self-deprecating. His eyes, when Eddie stares at him in surprise, are steady and blue. He doesn't sound like he’s blurting something out, or getting something off his chest, or confessing something he’s embarrassed of. He just sounds like he’s telling Eddie about the weather, something mundane. The sun is hot in the sky, they’re in New Mexico, and Buck is, apparently, in love with him.
Buck confesses to Eddie after the kidnapping. Eddie, in a fit of madness, accepts his confession. It'll be fine - just because Eddie isn't in love with Buck, doesn't mean he can't be his boyfriend.

Eddie doesn't make the decision, not really. He doesn't even realize what he's doing until he's already doing it, until his hand is on Buck's thigh—on the bare skin of it, feeling sticky, clinging sweat—landing too high up.
It's without conscious choice, when his pinky stretches under the fabric of the bunched up shorts, following hair and warmth. Eddie's heart stutters in his chest but, he isn't given a chance to worry, or think about stopping, because Buck's legs spread at the contact, and he melts, collapses completely into Eddie's side.
Eddie's breath catches.
His calloused fingers pass over soft skin, and his thumb squeezes and kneads into the toned muscle. It's involuntary, like a reflex, like Buck is his to touch, and has been his.
The heat must be getting to him.

Summary
He’s not stupid. It took him some time — years — but Eddie’s half certain that, should his patience snap one day, should he lean in across the way one night when it’s just the two of them, should he palm at Buck’s jaw to bring his face closer and kiss him on the mouth, Buck would kiss him back. That’s not the problem.
The problem is that Eddie’s gonna ruin it.
He’s ruined every other romantic relationship in his life. If it happens with Buck, Eddie knows neither of them will come back from it.
These days, he’s content with having Buck the way he does now. He may succumb to weakness, sometimes, like he just did in the kitchen, holding Buck like that, but Eddie’s willpower is the stuff of legend. He’s happy with his place in Buck’s life. He can play the part of codependent best friend, dad who stepped up, platonic soulmate.
The main issue here, really, hindsight twenty-twenty and all, is that Eddie really misses being a husband.
or: five times eddie, willing and knowing, acts like buck's husband, and one time he. well. you can guess where this is going.
