Nie Huaisang did not hear the first time his name was called from the pristine stage outside the city hall. The world had narrowed and stilled into something not quite real. He was…unfocused. Unaware. Which was a very bad thing considering what was happening a mere few feet in from of him. It wasn't until he turned his head and saw the faces of the people around him, all of them fixed on him with expressions ranging from relief to ashen-faced horror, that he realised something had happened.

Wanyin thought Huaisang might have sounded closer that time. He hoped so.
"Huaisang!" He shouted again, hand covering his mouth to try and filter the air. He took an unsteady step in the direction of the voice, "Huaisang, I'm-"
Then his foot slipped on something he couldn't see and would never find out. With a shout, he went tumbling down a hill he hadn't seen in the haze, rolling head over foot through patches of dried grass and leaves. He felt like he was falling for very long time, though with how muddy his perception of time had become, he couldn't be sure. Long enough that by the time he stopped, he didn't think he could even begin to reorient himself. Fuck. When he got back to the Nightless City he was going to fucking kill someone.

He had two weeks left at most. For all he knew it could have been a matter of days. Even worse was the thought that people were going to be watching all over the country. His parents, his brother…
He was so busy thinking about it that he jumped a bit when Huaisang suddenly asked, "Are you scared?"

Huaisang was fairly certain he had put just one egg into his pan. He had taken out the carton, pulled out one singular egg, and cracked it into his pan before tossing the shell in the general direction of his compost bin (in this house, they remained eco-friendly). There was quite literally no way for there to be two eggs in his pan at that moment, but there they were, swimming back and forth over the surface of his cast iron pan as they sizzled and cooked through.
Huaisang sighed, blinked, and rubbed his eyes, feeling an ache begin to seep into his bones that hadn’t been there when he woke up. He looked back down at the stove.
There was only one egg in the pan.

“Lucas,” he sighed as he answered, “c’mon, this couldn’t have waited another couple-”
“Do you know where Elliott is?” Lucas cut in, and the worry in his voice made him stop short.
“No? Why would I know, I’ve been asleep. Why? What’s wrong?”
He heard Lucas hiss softly through his teeth before the sounds of what seemed to be a car door slamming reached his ears and an engine started up in the background, “Lucas? Is Elliott okay?”
