Summary
Four months in, Pete is beginning to realise that fatherhood is hard. Really, really hard. He misses the silence through which he can hear the voices in his head. He misses being alone with Patrick, misses touching him and kissing him all over. Pete misses his old life, last summer when they had no responsibilities. He might even miss last spring, when they lived for the soul purpose of living while they could.
All that said, Pete wouldn't change it for the world.

It's autumn 2002, and for just over a year, Fall Out Boy have been working on making it very clear that Pete and Patrick aren't together. They just aren't. It's what they do. They're PeteAndPatrick, music-making dream team, best friends, confidants, lovers, but they're not together- they're not a couple. The thing is, they have fully accepted their non-couple status, they're completely comfortable with it, and it seems as if nothing can change that. This is, of course, until something does just that. Patrick is pregnant, Pete is self-obsessed, Joe is pissed off, and Andy- poor Andy just wants someone else to take the night shift driving between venues once or twice.

"Mommy?"
Silence, for about the third time, except for Patrick's unanswered call ricocheting around the dreary hospital room walls. Even in the dark, the white paint glows with the ominous tone of antiseptic and anaesthetic. Patrick knows that the dancing teddy bears on the walls are supposed to be comforting, funny, maybe- they're supposed to make him smile, but he knows. He knows that they're fake grins, as easily removed as the vomit on the driveway at Patrick's house, scrubbed and hosed away as if that will make everything better.
He's only young, but he knows.

Sometimes when vegetarians and vegans eat animal matter again after a long time, it makes them sick. Patrick thinks this has happened to him, but Pete just thinks he's stubborn and won't admit that he's got gastroenteritis. Andy and Joe serve as reinforcements, and Pete couldn't be more grateful; he doesn't realise what he's taught Andy, and that's the beauty of ignorance.
