“Hi,” he responded, giving Maki a small wave before she also said hey to him. She was keeping an eye on Kaito to make sure that he wouldn’t just slip and fall with all those bags that he most certainly wanted to carry himself in the final stretch. “Glad you could make it through the storm.”
“Pft, it was nothing, the storm can’t beat us,” Kaito said, stepping inside without any issues before taking off his slippers to remove the snow from them like sand. Wait. Slippers?
“Hold on. You’re still wearing your slippers in this weather?” Shuichi asked, giving Kaito a pointed look, as Maki stepped inside as well before taking the bags from Kaito.

Summary
One could compare the state of the city to a ghost town, but even then, it would probably still be the wrong way to address it.
Rantaro noticed how the people passed him, but his gaze only went up to watch the dark, rainy sky as if there was something behind the clouds, almost as if he was waiting for the sun to return its light to the world. He sighed, raising his hand to partially shield his eyes from the endless amount of raindrops hitting his face. Overall, the rain hadn’t bothered him, but it had been easier to see when the raindrops weren’t landing directly in his eyes.

Summary
“Amami-kun?” Gonta prompts. Their voice is gentle, but uncertain. When they open their mouth again, it’s probably to apologise, so Rantaro speaks first.
“Spaced off again,” Rantaro says. He ties the last knot on his skates and stands up. Despite everything, he doesn’t waver as the blades hit the carpet, but of course keeping his balance off the ice was never an issue. A part of Rantaro is still relieved, though, and even more so when Gonta instinctively reaches out to steady him. He doesn’t really need it, but there’s something about having Gonta near, looking at him, holding his elbow… it makes him feel calmer. Even if this goes terribly, they’ll just go out for coffee afterwards and make plans to try again another day.
This isn’t your last shot, Rantaro reminds himself, closing his eyes and taking a breath. The ice isn’t going anywhere, and you aren’t either, if you’ll quit being a coward about it.
“I’m ready, Gonta,” Rantaro manages, looking up to meet their gaze.

A year after his career ending head injury, Rantaro finally steps back onto the ice.

Summary
“I’m not your minion,” Maki sighs, before reluctantly making her way over. “...What do you mean, expand your vast empire?” She stops when she’s close enough to peer over Gonta’s broad shoulder—he’s quite tall even while kneeling—and look down at his handiwork.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Kokichi huffs, drawing Maki from her thoughts. “I’m having Gonta prepare my army! And now that you’re here, I can force you to do the same! Go grab a shovel and gloves, I have a lot of minions to sprout!”
He gestures out at a formidable army of potted saplings, all laid out across the courtyard behind them. It’s a chilly day, wet and cloudy and hardly the sort Maki would choose to plant trees. It seems kind of miserable, actually, despite Gonta and Kokichi’s smiles.
Maki doesn’t turn and walk away yet, though, directing her attention towards Gonta. “You’re preparing his army?”
“We are planting trees,” Gonta explains.

Maki comes across two of her classmates in the courtyard. She ends up bonding with them in a way she hadn't expected.
