On those nights when the world is too quiet and Utena can’t sleep, she will lie awake in bed and attempt to conjure her parent’s faces. She knows their outlines well—her mother’s sharp bob, which landed just below the ear and her father’s wavy hair, cut uniformly short, yet wild at the top—but they are otherwise a total blur. They appear to her as faded photographs, badly damaged by the sun.
Utena's memories of her parents grow faded as she loses herself in fairytales.
