"He's a fucking liar-" J.J shouted.
The anger in his voice finally did it for Shane. The emotions bubbled over.
"I get it okay! Yes, I lied! Fuck. But it wasn't just my secret to keep. Don't you get that?"
A few of the guys scoffed. Drapeau crossed his arms, as if to say 'so what?'.
"Oh, fuck this! It wasn't only my secret! It was his too. What was I supposed to do, tell you anyway?"
"No. It's clear you'd choose him over us." J.J said, his lips pressed into a thin line.
Shane scoffed incredulously. "Of course I would! Wouldn't you all choose your wives over the team? Your families? Fuck."
No one said anything. Glancing around the room, they all seemed in shock. Maybe it was that he'd openly admitted to choosing Ilya over the team. Or maybe it was that he'd referred to Ilya as his family.
(post-hayden/video-gate the montreal voyagers reacted badly. shane gives them a little more of his mind this time)

Doesn’t fall under the series bookmarks for this author, so bookmarking separately.
Apparently a fix-it for a scene in one of the books? The Long Game? And isn’t in the TV show yet? (Haven’t watched)
Heaps of comments of people saying that this was what they wished happened in this scene in the book because they all hated the actual scene.
Saving so if I ever read that book then I can come back here to re-read this with more context to appreciate it even more (& probably do this immediately after I read the scene in question because apparently this version is satisfying & the canon version is infuriating?) -

Sheriff Stilinski wanted it stated for the record that he wasn't an idiot. He knew Stiles was up to his ears in something. There were too many nights sneaking out or in, too many coincidences, too many fumbled silences for him not to realize something was up, and it was escalating.
It wasn't any of the usual things, but when whatever it was landed his son in the hospital with a bullet in his leg, it was the last straw.

“It’s already been paid for,” the barista told him and then pointed toward the man that had been in front of Bucky. Even shadowed under the cap and hidden behind thick-rimmed hipster glasses, it was far too easy to recognize that face.

That was most definitely Steve Rogers -- aka, Captain fuckin’ America -- in semi-disguise, loitering as he waited for his drink.
Steve Rogers paid for his drink. Steve Rogers heard what he said. Christ, that was embarrassing.

Fits canon well, & humanises Leah, pointing out info from the newer A&O book, Wild Signs, that explains why Leah always hated Bran’s kids, especially Charles. He wasn’t just evidence of how Bran loved Blue Jay Woman & didn’t love her, but he was around the age of one of her own children (Zander) had been when she escaped & left him for dead & buried her baby. Combine that with the deaths of her young siblings. No wonder she was so jealous & bitter about suddenly acquiring a young “son” & couldn’t open her heart to him.
She had been trying hard to forget, not a difficult task given the blurring of memory which the Singer’s defeat had left her with; but sight of the boy scratched what had been dull misery into a gaping would.
Her “mates but not in love” situation with Bran, especially after her dubcon Change & Mating as per Wild Signs:
She ran when the moon called her; and her wolf coupled with Bran’s wolf. She understood coupling; it was what the Singer had taught her. This wolf-man looked different but underneath he was the same.Nice (🤔) things this story introduces: (SPOILERS)
* after Charles has grown & gone, white settlers get as far as them there in Aspen Creek. Bran immediately leaves to officially register their land, so doesn’t even realise the white folk brough disease which immediately wipes out what is left of Blue Jay Woman’s tribe, leaving just Leah alive. So she takes on responsibility of what to do about that & goes to the white blokes & kills them (with the “excuse” of their attempted assault).
* how this town founded by a pre-Christian man, has a chapel & all wear crosses. How Leah peacefully solved the problem of the travelling preacher.
* when Samuel brings to Aspen Creek a human widow of a wolf with 1 1/2 kids:
“I just checked; she is asleep now.”
The whole pack knew Samuel doted on children, knew his endless care and patience whenever one of the pack’s mates was pregnant (and of his sorrow when a woman miscarried or a child was stillborn).
“I’ll be back to see her in the morning,” he said. “Let her sleep as long as she wants. You both need the rest.”
Leah stiffened at his sympathy. He knew her - saw more her own mate. Leah was thankful Samuel did not live in Aspen Creek.
* details of David Christiansen’s change, Leah taking responsibility to resolve that (peacefully & in a way that Bran probably wouldn’t have) while Bran was away, and to check up on Adam as a result.
Good soldiers often make very good werewolves. They are disciplined and used to working within a strictly defined hierarchy (not to mention naturally athletic and good in fights). However, werewolves usually make poor soldiers. They take orders badly from humans and turning furry once a month is not recommended when it is the night of the ‘big push’ (or when defending against enemy attack).Leah might be a cold bitch, but it’s not all without reason, & she doesn’t shirk her responsibility (while protecting her own boundaries even though Bran doesn’t give a shit) and she brings something to the leadership of the pack that Bran lacks. He’s very lucky he has her & he doesn’t realise or appreciate how much.
Bran would be home soon; and as always when he returned he would be demanding, both in bed and out. No matter that he trusted her as his second in command, she would have to give a detailed accounting of her management in his absence. He never let her forget this was his pack, his domain. But it was hers too. -

I don’t think the “Mercy being raised in another pack until she was a naughty little girl” is canon (I was under the impression that Margi had given her directly to Bran at around 3 months old, but not sure where I got that so I could be wrong) but the rest fits canon really well, offers insight & depth, and phrases it well. Especially the bits surrounding the Porsche & the whole Samuel situation:
PORCHE:
Why he even had a Porsche:
It was a ridiculous extravagance, but Samuel had encouraged my purchase of the vehicle as a symbol of status and power that would impress the human side of even my most cantankerous Alphas’ psyche. Driving that car at night, at speed, through Montana back roads with the top down was the only joy I’d found to rival that of the hunt. Why she wrecked it & why he reacted the way he did:
Mercy had raised a teenager’s normal contrariness to an art form. Bryan had always coped with grace and humor. With him gone, I had become her guardian. But her response to my authority was … inconsistent. I was seized by a sudden curiosity when I caught Mercy eying the Porshe, and snarled, “Don’t touch my car,” at her with the full force of an Alpha’s command. Kailas, who had been passing by the back bumper, leapt away and prostrated himself on the ground with a whine.
Mercy dropped to her knees. “Yes, Bran,” she murmured, and scuttled away. I comforted Kailas that he hadn’t done anything wrong, then shifted and settled behind some branches, down-wind of the car, to see what would happen.
I didn’t have to wait for long.
...
The road was slick beneath my paws and I was wondering if perhaps my little experiment had been ill-timed when I heard a terrible squeal of brakes.
...
I’d always told her curiosity could kill a coyote as well as a cat, but I’d assumed it would be her own inquisitive nature that would put her at risk. Not my stupid impulse goading her into reckless action.
...
The next day, Samuel urged me to forbid Mercy to drive until she turned 18. “It’s a fitting punishment,” he said. I could scent it on him, the same frantic need to protect her that I felt beating away in my own heart.
“As if that would work,” I scoffed lightly. My poorly planned experiment had certainly proven that.
“It would, Da,” Samuel insisted. “The accident, it scared her. Mercy keeps saying she needs to get back on the horse, but she’d be glad of the excuse not to.”
“Bryan asked me to watch over her,” I told him. “He’d not thank us for raising his daughter to run from her fears.”
I assigned Charles to teach Mercy to drive cars, to check that they were in good condition and repair them if they weren’t.THE SAMUEL SITUATION:
After Bryan’s death:
I don’t think Mercy would have returned, were it not for Samuel.
...
More than once I found her sitting with Samuel by the lake, Mercy scrubbing away the tears that she would not show another living soul. The creepy pedo romance & Bran’s solution:
As she matured, the love Mercy felt for Samuel grew to a warmer desire. That wasn’t unexpected, and Samuel had plenty of practice, over the years, at deflecting young females’ crushes.
It was nearly too late when I realized that Samuel was encouraging her.
...
I knew Samuel. Knew that he would care for Mercy, wrap her up, love her tenderly and protect her from the world. It was his nature. Mercy would submit to such treatment for just so long, and then she would fight with all the desperation of a trapped animal. Samuel was … fragile, in ways that no one else seemed to recognize. He was treading on rotten ice, all uncaring. I could hear it creak beneath his paws. Mercy’s rejection would be enough to send him crashing down into the dark.
So, to save my son, I sent Mercy away. And to be certain she stayed, I told her that Samuel wasn’t interested in romancing her, but in breeding children on her. The look on Mercy’s face when she tasted the truth of my words remained with me long after she was gone.

Good headcanon. Apparently official wiki says “met at a mutual friend/ex’s party” actually is how they met
Set before & during Book 1, Moon Called
Fave quotes:Toward the end of Kyle and Warren's first actual date, Kyle explained that they couldn't go back to his house, because he had people there. Warren wasn't sure what his face did, then, because Kyle hastily explained that he had a client and her kids staying there, at least until the restraining order came through. Warren blinked, and suddenly Kyle's giant house, far too big for any one man, made sense. The wolf in the back of his head thought something like, like a pack house, and something like, protects people, and Warren would realize later that that was the moment he and his wolf got on the same page, the moment he went all in on Kyle Brooks.
About Ben:
He'd do, Warren thought. Tomorrow he might be a nightmare, and most of the days after, and they'd deal with that, but Warren felt like he'd gotten a pretty good look at the stripped down bones of him while he was too tired to put up any kind of front, and he'd do. -

Missing scene from book 13, Soul Taken.
"Cars do weird things sometimes," Warren cut in. "I could tell you so many stories about farm trucks." The one that wouldn't start if it was raining occupied a particular place in his memory. Sometimes he still thought switching from horses had been a mistake. All of their quirks at least made sense, somewhere in their squirrely little brains. "New cars need the kinks shaken out." He had never owned an actual new car before to be sure of that, but it sounded reasonable enough, he thought.

Smol Steve the shit-stirring ethical spy stalker!
Only a chapter in and it’s my new favourite. (As always)he kind of figured the apocalypse-revolution would have occurred and money would no longer exist by now.
... the year’s not over yet...That’s the problem with getting coffee before you’ve had coffee. It’s a classic causality dilemma. Difficult to gain one without the other already present.
Dropping the big truthbombs here.
“I think you underestimate the amount of time you spend frowning.”
Steve frowns.
“Um, hey, this is embarrassing, and I know it’s not your job to monitor the bathroom just because you have the closest office to it, but do you know whose job it is to monitor the bathroom? Cause it definitely needs, uh, monitoring?”
James B. Barnes is yet another stupidly handsome super spy who forgets how to talk when they aren’t in Charm and Disarm Mission Mode. Steve’s worked at Shield long enough to know that agents are so attractive it’s stressful for normal people to look at them, and that agents are often incredibly bad at small talk with civilians.

Bucky POV.
Smol Steve.
Modern setting.
Bucky 20. Steve around same. Bucky dropped out of uni after 2 years to rescue family. Lost scholarship doing so.
Bucky has 2 sisters - Becca (11) & Hannah (8), & Mum. Just left ex-step-dad Frank from New Jersey.
Sarah is alive. Sarah & Winnie work together as nurses.
Bucky works as a security guard at the same hospital. Steve studies art at community college. The one where Bucky with the sad eyes is trying to survive & hold his family together before he can even think about clawing his life back. And Steve is there, being his usual prickly, stubborn, determined, thoughtful, artistic, occasionally law-breaking but only for a good cause to help the downtrodden & stick it to the arseholes kind of way SJW.
No big superhero-style disasters, or even big regular life disasters (in-story, anyway), just recovering from regular life disasters. So it’s all recovery - that slow recovery that you don’t even realise is happening because you’re too busy just trying to keep surviving and you don’t really believe that recovery is even a thing you could have anymore so you don’t even notice that you have space for that now so it kinda started without your permission and it feels worse instead of better while it’s happening so you think it’s just more of life being genaerally shit. But it’s still happening. (Neither of the boys has to rescue each other.)
The one with Steve's art metaphors about drawing the fire hydrant & about oil painting layers vs ala Prima, and Bucky’s physics & engineering analogies.
And with the section break graphics that slowly evolve/recover over the course of the story.Little guys having big feelings. About life & about each other.
My initial bookmark had lots of quotes of my favourite parts, but I want other people to read this story & don’t want to spoil it for them. (Wouldn’t it be great to be able to have a public & a private bookmark for the same piece?)
But big chunks of the fire hydrant scene were here, and most, if not all, of Steve’s art might-be-metaphors (what can I say, I’m an artist, so they struck bone for me).
And when Bucky left something on the front stoop.
And several pieces about the pain of distance between a mother and a becoming-adult kid, especially when life is shit and they accidentally make it worse for each other without realising because they’re both desperately hanging on by their fingernails. (For no reason at all. Nope, nothing to see here. Ouch! If we had a dishwasher...)What a shame I don’t have those fave bits here anymore for a quick highlights reel speedrun, I guess I’ll just have to read the entire thing again to find them. Oh no! And then a bunch of her other stuff too. Oops!
It’s Zenaida so you know it’s good. & well written. & funny. & heart wrenching. & weirdly educational about Steve &/or Bucky’s job/specialty/interests. & great banter. & kid side-characters that are both obnoxiously real and yet also fun. & the personality of the POV character revealed through the way they think. All that delicious, chewy goodness she delivers every time.
Just read it. Read them all.
