This is a (some could say partially, others could say fully) darker interpretation of the canon romance, though it does stick to canon, many scenes are expanded upon (a few are rewritten either because they don't seem right in canon, or I needed to find a way to fit them) and new ones are made to fully make this story. Characterization of Thane on the other hand, that's ambiguous if you want to consider it canon compliant. Personally I do.

Cassiopeia Shepard's life is peaceful now, after the war. She lives in a nice apartment in the wards, in a loving relationship with Thane Krios. Everything is almost normal now. She practically has the perfect life.
Except for when the past comes slamming back. Seen as a vision burned in her mind, the dead turn into enemies she must fight off against, or hearing the sonorous horn of a destroyer or the shrill shriek of a banshee violently throws her out of the safety & warmth of her sleep. Often unable to leave the heightened state of anxiety, she's become an insomniac, hardly sleeping more than a few hours a night for several days, & the days she does? Full of nothing but reliving the moments of horror she has lived through.
As her health slowly breaks down from the lack of rest, desperate measures are given & taken for the days she's unable to fall into rest and stay in rest. Many would say what he does is criminal or morally abhorrent, but he's lived a life where he's taken many lives, both as a weapon & of his own volition, so this measure, whilst akin to a betrayal, is the way he knows she's able to rest peacefully, even with extreme actions taken. This is one of many such nights.

In 2183, 35 years after a discovery on Mars that leapt humanity forward, a team of scientists make a trip to Eden Prime to transport a newly discovered intact Prothean beacon. Doctor Cassiopeia Shepard is one of those assigned to help transport this potential scientific breakthrough. But a danger long forgotten by galactic civilization reappears and causes turmoil on the idyllic colony, with a looming greater threat overhead, she takes her life into her own hands, with dire consequences given to her decisions.
Armed with a warning of the future and a threat from the past hunting her, she'll travel through the galaxy to chase down leads alongside Commander Alenko and his team to prevent a galaxy-wide threat that has been rumored to claim species before them.
