Summary
Set in the Human Domestication Guide collaborative setting.
Humanity has been invaded by a precursor race of hypercompetent plant dommes called the Affini, and forcibly given paradise in a post-scarcity culture that heavily prioritizes the care for its protectorates, to the point of drugging and mind-controlling them into a blissful reverie if necessary. For almost everyone this is a vast improvement. All that’s required is to give up any silly notions that anyone except for the Affini know what’s best for everyone; in many cases the poor things clearly don’t.
Arc 5 of The Place Where We Can Stop Running. Without reading that and is sequels, Learning to Walk (or its accessible version) and To Follow in Their Footsteps, many references and ideas in this story will not be clear. Please read from the beginning of this series.

Latria Clusin, a bureaucrat for the Bureau of Xenosophont Wellness and Care, has never had a floret of her own. Yet, she finds herself strangely protective of Paige. Jealousy, combined with paranoia, lead to her concluding that unless Latria domesticates Paige herself, someone else will. And Latria certainly doesn't trust anyone else to take care of the poor, wounded terran.

Summary
The Law of the Hammer is simple; to the hammer, every problem is a nail.
Daria Clerval, former lawyer and present independent, has a hammer in the form of her mind. Since the Compact arrived and upstaged the corporations, it has been her mind, her brain, and her skills at negotiating that have kept her from being forcefully domesticated, despite her former colleagues best efforts to seemingly get her branded a feral, but that mind has left her worried and isolated.
Chantrieri Bract, mil-spec Affini taking a break from pacification, has a hammer in the form of it's body. It has created it's meld of xenofauna to be a tool beyond anything else, something that can survive anything, any battle, any takeover, any foolhardy feral that thinks itself stronger and smarter than the Compact, but that body has made it isolated and worrisome.
Daria wants independence. Chantrieri wants a floret. She wants a negotiation. It wants a battle. Those two things are closer than either really know.
