After a few more seconds of just staring at it like it would explode, Barbara placed a hand on his shoulder. "Are you going to open it, then?"
This startled Jacob out of his dumbfounded stupor and he fumbled with the envelope, opening it only to see a few words written in cursive and a lollipop.

The surge of love and affection that ran through him nearly made him stagger. He had missed Chris so much during his entire journey, never knowing if the kiss he gave him the day before when he and Piers went running off after another lead on a cure for was going to be their last.

Summary
Dr. Robby initially couldn't care less that one of the newest residents got shot on his off hours. After the day that was the Pittfest massacre he didn't want to think about anything, at least until his next shift. Yet, when Dr. Abbot calls complaining that the new kid only has Robby as his emergency contact, he leaves to be by the student's side.
There he discovers that his new resident Dennis Whitaker was the one that was shot, and that he has been secretly squatting at the hospital all this time. After everything that's happened, he can't help himself from doing everything in his power to save another lost soul from the brink of disaster.
But perhaps the lost soul will be the one saving him at the end of the line.
NOTE: Alternative reality where Dr. Santos didn't find out about Dr. Whitaker first.

Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.
