Summary
Constructs: robots with human neural tissue, built to be more efficient at making quick judgments, but more dangerous as a consequence. So long as they have controls in place, and those controls aren’t abused, they’re perfectly safe. Without it, surely they’ll kill everyone in sight. After all, it’s only natural. They’re part human.
Xie Lian, expensive, customised, one-of-a-kind rogue CombatUnit, has spent over 175,000 hours as a being with free will, and has spent most of it just trying to get by. However, despite being considered lost in the battle that decimated the planet he was built to protect, he is still legally owned by his manufacturer, BaiWu; more specifically its CEO: Jun Wu.
Xie Lian has spent a lot of time pretending to be someone and something else. When he reunites with old friends and meets a charming stranger who seems like someone he can finally open up to, he finds himself wrapped in a galaxy-spanning conspiracy with the need to answer one question: does he still remember how to be himself?
And, more importantly: how can he make himself, a weapon of mass destruction, into the kind of person he wants to be?

I would never have seen peace, but I would not have been trapped by my violence. Not a single soul in this world is truly human, and anyone who pretends otherwise is lying to themselves. Each and every one of us is a chunk ripped violently from the flesh of the rest of the universe. What does it matter, how many pieces we’re in?

I could shift from an active participant to a passive observer at the drop of a hat. If I really think about it, this habit of mine may have rubbed off on A-Yao – or perhaps we became close because of a shared tendency to fade out of society on a whim, drifting like feathers on the winds of conversation. Before this moment, I never imagined that I would come to see the fact of my distance as anything more than a tool.-
