He throws a piece of hardware for Matt to fix, like giving a dog a bone.
And Matt takes it, and he fixes it, because he likes fixing things.
But the difference between a piece of tech and Mello, is tech doesn’t argue with you—it just lays helplessly, waiting for you to mend it back to use.
Mello argues with you, and he does not take it lying down. He doesn’t wait, either. He’s not patient like a circuit board is.

Summary
When Matt wakes, he’s pretty sure he can feel the phantom pain of bullets ripping holes in his body.
He panics once the realisation hits him, his breathing comes out frantic, the sheets stick to his sweaty skin, and he only just barely manages to stop himself from falling out of bed in pure disbelief. He’s pretty sure he can still hear the screeching of tires over asphalt, the sound of his car engine being pushed to its limit, and the terrible noise of guns being fired even though he was ready to surrender.
That wasn’t a dream.
He remembers how much it hurt to get shot several dozen times too vividly for it to have been a dream.
And yet as he runs his shaky hands over his own body to check for injuries, he finds himself whole, his skin intact, the searing pain of being ripped apart nothing but a faint memory now.
Something is very, very wrong.
He knows he’s joked about respawning like in his video games before, but that was said in jest. A joke. Not real.
This very much is.

Or: Matt gets stuck in a time loop until he figures out a way to keep both himself as well as Mello from dying.
He just hopes he can figure it out before he loses his sanity.

The neon lights from buildings and billboards are a blur, as fuzzy as his thoughts while instinct and long-buried muscle memory take over for him. He is a motherless grub on his bed, disgusting and useless. His limbless body pulsates and squirms as he leeches energy out of his gaming consoles and regurgitates it into frantic, desperate texts to Mello.
He never hears back.
Mello is probably swinging his hips around in the Coyote Ugly Saloon, whipping his blonde hair back and forth, accepting a shot from another stranger.

The universe in every sense.
The universe as in, the totality of all space, time, matter, and energy.
And the universe as in the omnipotent, conscious entity that orchestrates all of existence.
None of it is helpful though. None of it explains why this great, omnipotent force they dub The Universe has done what it has done to him.
Why, in a macrocosm of people and possibilities, is it Mello that he feels these feelings for? What evolutionary or cosmic or psychic justification is there behind that?
