Summary
He had always known Mello would destroy himself trying to beat him; he had a feeling that deep down, Mello had known it, too.
Near didn’t want to be as shocked as he was.
But the fact that Mello had gone as far as he did proved something Near never liked to think about, something he had always brushed aside as soon as it entered his mind.
Mello truly had hated him.

Summary
Being a school for the gifted, it had always been a competitive environment.
But when L requested it be made into a feeder system for his successorship, the competition had increased tenfold—looking at it from the courtyard, Roger knew that the building had stayed the same; that the walls stood the way they always had, and that the gate had rusted only slightly, yet the school itself had become a stranger to him.
And every year, the same thing was happening to the students.

Summary
He throws a piece of hardware for Matt to fix, like giving a dog a bone.
And Matt takes it, and he fixes it, because he likes fixing things.
But the difference between a piece of tech and Mello, is tech doesn’t argue with you—it just lays helplessly, waiting for you to mend it back to use.
Mello argues with you, and he does not take it lying down. He doesn’t wait, either. He’s not patient like a circuit board is.
