Hugo shrugged. “Whatever. Get some sleep. You sound like you’re gonna pull a knife on me.”
He crossed his arms. “... How did you know I didn’t sleep?”
“Because I didn’t sleep, and I heard what you said to Nuru this morning.”
Varian stalked over to the bed and sat down on the edge heavily, pointedly.
“... You should sleep too.” He couldn’t help the note of concern slipping into his tone.
“Nah,” Hugo turned around and pulled his goggles over his eyes again. “I’m busy.”
“Well, I’m not sleeping unless you sleep.”
OR: they don't sleep because they're morons. Then they accidentally fall asleep on each other.

Summary
In a world populated by Soulmates— people drawn together by wordless music connecting them to their destined other half— Varian is an anomaly. He is Songless, someone without a Soulmate of his own. He makes due with the cards dealt to him, used to being the castle oddity by now, but when an interesting blond takes up residence in the castle, he can't help but be drawn to him.
Hugo, on the other hand, is horrified to find that not only is his Soulmate a palace brat, but that Varian doesn't hear him back— meaning Hugo is trapped in a one-sided bond. When presented with a horrible choice between completing the theft Donella had sent him to do, or taking a frightening step into vulnerability, Hugo finds himself at an impasse he just might not be able to charm his way out of.
And then politics get involved.

Varian; the Prince of Corona, the (secretly adopted) son of King Fredrick and Queen Arianna, has a few problems he needs sorted out; he doesn’t feel worthy of being a Prince, the boy he was raised with is turning into someone he may or may not like, and even worse, he really doesn’t wanna be king someday.
Hugo; The trusted Equerry of the Prince, best friend of the Prince, son of Captain Donella of the royal guard, and he has a few problems too. Something he had wanted since he was young isn’t super appealing anymore. Now all he wants is a life of adventure, and of Varian.
