Summary
Tony's having a hard time remembering how he crossed the distance from the grassy knoll to Peter, and he can't really recollect how his hands ended up on either side of the kid's face. Before he knows it, he's gripping the kid's shoulders just as tightly as Rhodey had gripped his own, his hands trembling. "Pete, kid, c'mon. Say something. If you don't say something I'm gonna seriously lose it here. Don't fucking do this."
A pair of headphones rattle around Pete's neck. Tony's shaking him.
Maybe he'll come to, like a half-drowned puppy you pull out of the gutter.
Then just as suddenly he's not shaking him, because Quill is prying his hands back from the kid protectively, and Strange's palm is pushing Tony's shoulder to put some distance between him and the boy. Everyone knows Peter is a special case, for him. A special mission set aside to complete. He promised May. He promised Peter. He held him while he disintegrated. He washed him down a sink and apologized in multitudes. Someone seethes, "What do you mean, he didn't come back? What do you mean?" and he recognizes it belatedly as his own voice.
*******
Everyone comes back, when the snap is undone. Or, well — almost everyone.

Peter parker you are so loved.
--
"I love you," he gasps, tears spilling. "I can't leave someone I love behind."
Her eyes fill to the brim. Stupid child, with his feelings on his sleeve. So easy to speak his mind and heart.
Stupid, kind child, bringing these painful emotions to the surface.
Please don't make this harder for me, Peter.
"I love you, too. And I'll never, not once, forget that. And I'm— so sorry—"
--
And Ned's got a brand new video-game he's dying to try out, but I dunno if he can handle it; it's a horror game, you know? He's kind of a big softy — oh."
Tony glances at Peter with a scoff and a raised eyebrow, though his smirk fades a little at what has drawn the kid's already battered attention span from the conversation. Peter holds an old trophy in front of him that he had taken off the nearest shelf: a replica, actually, but still no less important. It's the arc reactor, etched with those intimate, familiar words that Pepper still whispers to him when they're alone and living in their own little world.
"Aaww, look at that," Peter says with a playful smile, pressing the trophy against his chest, where the reactor would've resided in Tony's. "... Proof that Tony Stark has a heart." The sight of it leaves Tony feeling a sense of purpose that he can't quite identify. This is before everything. This is before Peter ever crumbles away to dust under his hands. It's peaceful. It's just what Tony needed.
"Give that here, you little punk," Tony huffs.
He drags the boy into a headlock and ruins his carefully combed hairdo, leaving wild curls in his wake.
"Mr. Stark?" Peter asks later, when he's packing up to go. Tony looks up expectantly. "Thanks for everything."
--
As Peter presses his hand to the glass window that separates him from the vast expansion of planets and stars, he feels unstoppable. Unafraid. He hums to the music and feels at ease when he closes his eyes. The journey's half-done, but it feels like the ending's been written; MJ and Ned, May and Mr. Stark, they're all waiting for him. He's so excited to introduce them to Gamora. And — and he's ready to start his life up again.
He'll take MJ to the cafe a bunch, and he'll visit Ned all the time. He'll play poker until he's actually good enough to add to the chip in his pocket, and he'll eat a lot of Sam's home-cooked meals in the good company of his soldier buddies. He'll sit in his favorite chair. He'll hang out with Dr. Banner and gush about his work in the lab, and he'll call up Cassie and see how her algebra's doing. He'll open all his presents with May and go to another Mets game for Ben, and he'll be Morgan's superhero. He'll go see a fireworks show with Mr. Stark for real, one they can both actually enjoy.
God, there's so much to do.
He feels like there's not enough years in his life to do it, whether he lives another year or until he's a hundred.
But it's a good kind of restlessness, full of purpose.

Summary
Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.
And that’s when things get complicated.

“Even now, I can tell you pity me. I can see that you’re here out of some sort of obligation to help me. It’s disgusting.”
“I’ve always wondered why people hated pity so much,” Peter said, eating his noodles while looking her in the eye. “It’s so close to empathy. Can you tell the difference?”
--
“I think Wanda is high toxicity and high risk. She’s extremely strong and not exactly stable. I think you might be high toxicity too, but the risk is so incredibly low that it doesn’t matter. I’d be more afraid of someone off the street than you because they’d have a higher risk. You’re like a poison dart frog behind the glass in a museum.”
“And what if that glass breaks?”
“That was a bad analogy. It won’t break. It’s a forcefield.”
“What if the power goes out?” Peter was back to being a fifteen year old who wanted to be clever.
Bruce smiled. “I’ve got about fifteen backup systems for it and a vibranium wall just for kicks.”
“Thanks Dr. B.”
--
“Why do they love me?” asked Peter.
“I don’t know. Why do you love your Aunt May? It’s something more than I can explain. I can tell you why we like you, though. You care. You care more than anyone I’ve ever met.”

Peter startles awake when someone shakes him.
“Sorry, honey,” May says. Peter blinks a couple times and she comes into focus, her hair pulled back from her face. She’s trying not to look a certain way, but he can see it in her eyes anyway. She clears her throat, keeps talking. “But it’s…” She glances away, wets her lips. “You gotta get ready.”
He remembers what day it is, and his heart beats like a drum at someone’s execution. But he tries to put on a mask, make it all seem normal. It’s everything but, despite the fact that he’s been dealing with reaping day since he was born, between himself, Ben and May. That fear that one of them could be taken away. Sent to surefire slaughter. But now Ben is gone, taken despite never having his name drawn from a bowl, and May’s finally safe. Now Peter’s name is in there alone. The last Parker sitting on the chopping block. He doesn’t know how to be. He doesn’t know what normal is, when the Hunger Games are looming on the horizon.

Summary
Tim's eyes blinked open to see Joker's wide smile. "Little birdy!" Joker crowed in delight. "Is there something you wish to tell your Papa?"
"Fuck you," Tim spat out.
Joker slammed the rods into his temples. Tim's vision whited out, pain coursing through his veins. He didn't know how long Joker held them there, but when he took them away, Tim's throat was raw with his screams and his muscles twitched and jerked in the aftermath of the electricity.
"Ya know I don't like to be left out of the joke, Junior," Joker said thoughtfully. "I'm told lotsa kids your age hide things from their Papa."
--
or, Tim is a metahuman with the ability to heal from death. When he is kidnapped, the Joker plans to turn him into Joker Junior. Then, Tim is killed, and Joker realises the Robin he caught can't stay dead.

Bookmarker's Notes
Tim doesn’t know how to feel. He never played Allegro non Molto for her in the end. Or Presto or November or Salut d’Amour. Or any other pieces she asked him to learn. A part of him is expecting her to tell him that their trip has been extended the next time he calls them. Another part of him dully points out that technically, death is an extended trip for most people. And his parents- his mother- was always very good at those.
--
She just stares at him.
“I don’t know how to respond to that, so I’m just going to reiterate: no amount of therapy can fix you. You are broken. Broken. When you finally snap and decide to take over the universe, I hope you remember that I called it and helped you out.”
--
“You are making mistakes,” he tries to huff out, but Tim can hear his voice trembling. “On a normal day, you would have been able to react appropriately.”
It’s as close to an apology he’ll get, and Tim-
Tim is tired. He is so, so tired. For once, there is no rage. There is no anger or bitterness or betrayal. Just a bone-deep exhaustion that he hasn’t been able to escape since he first drowned at five years old.
“Don’t do it again,” is all he says, and Robin jerks his chin down.
--
Except he got attached. Of course he did. How could he not? It was impossible not to get attached to such a brilliant and ridiculous boy, a boy who would scold him and force him to eat, who made it his personal mission to bother Bruce until he went to counselling, who would eagerly help with whatever he could without a single complaint.
No matter what he did, Tim was here to stay, and there was nothing Bruce could do to stop it. And after realising that trying to push Tim away would be futile, Bruce has tried to be more present in his life.
--
Tim tries to say something else, but his voice can barely make a whimper, and Bruce has to force down a whine. He wants to protest, wants to argue and command Tim to fight, wants to promise that everything is going to be okay, that he can fix this somehow. Because that’s what Batman does. That’s what Batman is meant to mean.
And yet-
He can’t fix this.
He can’t fix the giant hole in Tim’s torso, can’t glue his shattered spine back together, can’t carefully slot the burst organs on the floor below back into their rightful home. Because there is a hole in his son.
There is a hole in his son and he is dying.
--
“It just is! This- There’s no need to worry when I come back because it’s a guarantee, whereas with you- It’s just- It’s-!”
“-a tragedy,” Jason finishes, “because I’m loved, and you’re not. Because if all those deaths mean something, then it means that you suffered. It means that those deaths were unfair. In a twisted way, if your deaths mean something, then it means that everything else was for nothing. That in the long run, Timothy Drake suffered for nothing. Right?”
--
“I am not leaving. Not again. Not anymore.”
“Cass,” he says, voice dangerously close to cracking, but she just squeezes his wrists gently.
“It is not okay,” she whispers brokenly, but with a kindness he hates and loves in equal measure, “and that is alright.”
Tim chokes, tears welling up and spilling down his face, even as he tries to force the shaking sobs back down, chest aching from the force of it. He holds his breath, hoping that the lack of oxygen will starve his impending breakdown away, but Cass-
Cass thumps him.
“Cry, stupid,” she says, voice trembling.
And Tim-
Tim breathes.
And he finally breaks.
He collapses forward into his sister, chest heaving with sobs that practically tear their way out of his throat, and it hurts more than any death he’s died before. Cass is crying with him, loud and open, but she doesn’t stop holding him, she doesn’t let him go for a second.
“Why did it never matter?” he hiccups out. “Why does it always take me dying for people to notice?”
“Why did you not tell me?” Cass counters, sniffing into his shoulder. “I would have been there.”
And that hurts, because Tim- Tim knows it’s a lie. He knows it deep in his cracked and scarred bones, that even if anyone had known, nothing would have changed.
“But you weren’t!” Tim howls. “None of you were! Whenever I need you, whenever I think about telling you, you all disappear! I needed you when Bruce disappeared, I needed Dick when Damian attacked me, I needed Bruce when Jason killed me, I needed my parents when I died in that fucking house over and over-!”
He whines into Cass’ neck, voice breaking as his throat spasms and aches.
“Why am I never first?” he finally admits hoarsely.
Cass shudders, a wounded sound escaping her chest, even as she weeps and clings on tightly.
“I’m sorry,” is all she says through her tears. “I’m sorry.”
And Tim can only cry even harder.
--
heartbreaking. how. dare. you.

It reminds him of someone, niggles something in the back of his mind, but he can’t think of who or what or why. It’s something about Tim’s stupidly loyal self-sacrifice in the face of grief, without the expectation of ever being recognized for it. The way that he plods on day by day by day, without complaint, without cowering. The way that he’s willing to protect others, save others, forgive others despite everything that they’ve done.

Summary
Death is usually the end. Finality. That's kind of the definition of it.
And falling several stories toward concrete usually meant death. Timothy Drake had certainly assumed as much in the final seconds before he hit the sidewalk at terminal velocity.
But Tim should have realized that, given the complexity of his life, his death would never be that cut and dry.
Enter: a severed head, ten missing months, and an immortal cult leader.
A little less simple. And for some reason, Jason Todd seems to have some answers to his missing months and the violent urge that curdles beneath his skin.

"Would you have grieved me, or the convenience I offered?"
Time’s face softened, their eyes glowing like a light left on for a child afraid of the dark. "You deserve to be saved, Timothy. You were meant to be saved."
Something in Tim’s chest loosened, the thing that was holding back everything he had ever felt concerning his deaths. Every time he had made a new friend after his first death and every one after, a part of him had wondered if he had deserved it for taking a place that wasn’t meant for him.
Placeholder.
But he wasn’t. He never had been. He wasn’t taking a more worthy person's place, he was remaking his own. He didn’t deserve everything that had been thrown at him, no matter what that small part of him hissed in moments of doubt.
He deserved to be here.
--
“You can have them if you want.” Tim said.
The way Tim had boxed these up were akin to how Damian wrapped the few sentimental objects he allowed himself to have. It wasn't something one just gave away.
“Don't you want them?” Damian asked, looking up at Tim.
“I need to make space for my new pictures.” Tim said easily. As if letting go was ever that simple.
