"Vex shouldn’t even have been out at all, really, except Vax had done the thing where he finished the milk and put the empty bottle back in the fridge so she didn’t realize they were out until 8:30 on a Sunday night, and Vex would be damned if she’d let her brother’s annoying habits keep her from having milk in her coffee the next morning, so out into the late autumn chill she went. She had her hood up and her hands in her jacket pockets, bracing herself against the cold wind. The weather was just starting to turn from fall to winter, and she was in a hurry to get to the store and get back, when she heard a strange noise coming from a side alley."
Vex goes out for groceries and comes back with a dog.

It had been less than 24 hours since she went out with Percy the first time, and while that evening had ended perfectly wonderfully, she couldn’t deny that the idea of going out with him on a proper date, one that both of them knew and agreed was a date from the beginning, filled her stomach with something disgustingly akin to butterflies.
So when Vex woke up the next morning with a cough like a Victorian consumptive and a fever of 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit, she was understandably put out."
Vex doesn't handle being sick very well. Percy doesn't handle Vex being sick very well, either.

"They had planned to meet for dinner that night, as Keyleth’s work schedule had prevented them from meeting up for some time recently, but she hadn’t showed. It wasn’t unusual for Keyleth to have to bow out of plans on short notice, especially if some veterinary emergency was involved. It was unusual for her not to show up, and not to call or text telling him what had happened. Perhaps it was paranoid of him to assume something was wrong, and coming to his friend’s house uninvited because of one missed dinner was almost certainly overstepping, but.
Percy’s friends were relatively few. He could be forgiven for being protective of the ones he had."
Keyleth struggles with anniversaries. Percy knows a thing or two about that.

"Vax looked terrible. His hair was falling in long, sweat-dark strands around his face, escaping erratically from its usually well-kept topknot. At not even halfway through his ambulance clinic rotation, just one step in his paramedic training, the bags under Vax’s eyes were nigh-omnipresent, but this evening looked even darker than usual. He was wearing his emergency backup clothes, the old t-shirt and sweatpants he kept at the EMS station for when he didn’t feel like wearing his uniform home. He blinked slowly when he saw Shaun, face heavy with weariness. 'Hey.'
'Hey.' Shaun walked over slowly, placing a hand on Vax’s shoulder. 'Long day?'"
