Summary
Magnus had known for days that something was going on with Alec; that he was working through something. So, it hadn’t been all that much of a surprise when Alec had come home saying they needed to talk. Well, not so much that they needed to talk, but more that Alec needed to tell him something.
The last thing he’d been expecting was for Alec to flip open the box, exposing its contents; dozens of bound journals he recognised immediately. Truth be told he hasn’t thought about those journals in years.
And Magnus’ stomach drops. Because it’s been, what… two? three? days since Magnus last saw his boyfriend and Alec looks destroyed. For a moment Magnus wondered if he’s missed something big happening but then his brain caught up and Magnus realised that Alec wasn’t injured and that he wasn’t just exhausted.
It’s heartbreak –Alec is heartbroken– and Magnus’ head spun because he knows it’s because of him.

"Magnus?" Alec calls out, voice a little shakier than he'd like as the door swings shut behind him, effectively trapping him in the living room with all of those nasty creatures that he desperately hopes are fake. But fake or not, his anxiety didn't care. His palms are already slick with sweat and his heart is trying to beat out of his chest.
The entire ceiling looks like a demonic galaxy made out of white cotton candy and arachnids.
OR Magnus decorates his apartment for Halloween. Alec doesn't handle it well.

Summary
When Alec comes over straight after work that evening, it's to find Magnus and his warlock friends meditating over a plate of General Tso's chicken. It's a really prettily arranged dish, the chicken pieces glazed with a shiny, translucent brown sauce and ringed by a wreath of fresh green broccoli. There are sesame seeds and spring onions sprinkled over top, and the smell is delicious.
The array and pentagram the plate is standing in the middle of is... not quite so wholesome.
