Summary
When Ilya woke again, his body ached from somewhere deep. Exhaustion burrowed into the fiber of his muscles and the marrow of his bones, consuming him entirely. He lay still, staring blankly at the ceiling, willing himself to move just enough to cover up with the blanket.
Shane would be back from his run soon, he figured. Most of the time, when he was having a hard day, Ilya would plaster a well-timed smile on his face and do his best not to worry his already anxious boyfriend. Today, he did not possess the willpower. He felt hollowed out, feckless, unmoored. This was the version of himself he kept carefully tucked away, hidden behind a fortress of self-assuredness, sarcasm, and charisma. This was the version of Ilya Rosanov no one got to see – not even Shane.
Any minute now, his carefully constructed facade and perfectly positioned walls would come crashing down. This time, he was too overcome by the sheer intensity of this bout of depression that he couldn't shield Shane from it. He was too exhausted to move, let alone conceal his shortcomings.

Summary
Ilya feels like a zombie; he’s an approximation of something living.
He knows what this is, of course. He isn’t stupid. He was just a child when he watched the life bleed out of his mama, long before she stopped breathing. He watched her sweet smiles grow hollow, and her kind eyes fall blank. He felt her slipping through his fingertips like grains of sand in an hourglass; her time was up before Ilya had truly even realised that it was running out.
When he looks in the mirror, he sees her staring back at him: blond hair, and blue eyes, and an emptiness that kills.

By now, they've been hooking up for something like six years, and so surely, surely, Hollander is aware of the fact that Ilya is not an alpha in the ways that count.
(Or: Hollander does not know. He finds out when Ilya unexpectedly goes into heat, and everything that they had falls to shit.)

Summary
Ilya closes his eyes.
He blinks back his tears. He wants to nod or shake his head or something, but he can't.
This can't be happening.
He blinks and blinks and blinks again but he's still in the hospital and he still feels like shit and his mom is dead and Shane is far away and he thinks he's depressed and there is something inside of him that he doesn't know what to do with.
Fuck, he thinks, in russian and in english and in french, even. Fuck.Or, in 2020, Ilya has a (very) unplanned, (very) complicated pregnancy, Shane has to learn that sometimes things don't work out the way he planned, and some other things. Set in The Long Game, kind of.

Summary
There was nothing Ilya loved more than fucking Shane Hollander – except, as he’d finally said out loud, maybe Shane Hollander himself.
The time at the cottage was perfect – more than perfect. Lifechanging. Universe-shifting. He had a boyfriend. A family. Everything he’d ever wanted – except that now it was time to go home, and deal with the one thing he still didn’t want to talk about.
His heat.
His disgusting, miserable, painful heat – that he would handle alone. Like he always did. But then Shane was asking him why, and that was the question, wasn’t it? Why, why, why?
