Work Text:
"You ever believe any of that 'mud people' crap you used to spew?"
"Ha! Nah, son. If anybody was the mud people, it'd be Neanderthals. So, the closest today would be the Irish and the Scots."
"White folks are less evolved, now?"
"Huh? Oh, you don't know. They done genetic analysis that showed early humans interbred with Neanderthals. It's where we got the most common gene for red hair."
"Most common? There's more than one?"
"Independent mutations have arisen in some African and Asian lineages."
"Huh. When did you learn biology?"
"I like to keep up on my reading. The topics involved have never been a particular sticking point."
"Man, you really could've been anything you fucking wanted, couldn't you?"
"Well, Deputy, I wanted to be an astronaut. What does that tell you?"
**
"What was he like?"
"I'm afraid you have to be more specific."
"No, I fuckin' don't."
"Fine. He was a teenager."
"Lotsa kinds of teenagers."
"A scared one."
"Scared of what? His daddy?"
"Only two things have ever frightened that man: his daddy and the dark. Think, in the end, he got over the first one. Doubt he'll ever be past the other."
**
"You really believe that bullshit you preach?"
"Bullshit? I believe you mean the Bible."
"Yeah. That bullshit."
"Son, you believe in anything at all?"
"I believe in ammunition?"
"You must have something better than that to offer me."
"Well, I sure got something worse."
"Oh, now, don't give me that."
"Fine. Used to be Catholic."
"I notice the preterite, there."
"I think it's imperfect, asshole."
"The tense or the religion?"
"Fuck you. Both."
**
"You play any chess, Deputy?"
"I look like I'm any good at chess?"
"Looks are oft known to be deceptive."
"Man, you can't even say cliches simply."
"Deputy."
"I'm a mean hand at checkers."
"Would you like me to teach you?"
"I don't want anything from you."
"Really. I could be forgiven for thinking the opposite, as you continue to seek me out in my incarceration."
"It's not you I want."
"Obviously. But it's still I who is giving it to you."
"What makes you think I'm getting it at all?"
"Hmm. Well I must admit, I had you pegged for a sadist, not a masochist, but I have made a mistake or two in my time."
"I'm not getting off on this."
"Well, evidently, that's the draw."

Tim was thinking about getting off on it.
First he was thinking about the way their conversations usually went, with the barrier between them, and Boyd, with his bright, sharp eyes watching him for any signs of weakness.
He could breathe into the telephone and take his dick out, stroke himself to completion while they chatted. Boyd wouldn't be able to see, but he would know.
Then he was thinking about if Boyd was a regular prisoner and not such a high-risk one, and they could speak face-to-face in one of those visiting rooms. Tim could get Boyd to jerk him off under the table, where the guards couldn't see.
But that wasn't enough for Tim, so then he thought about a different world, where Raylan put Boyd away by his lonesome and Tim was cast as a prison guard. He could take advantage of his position, call Boyd away into private, and fuck him whether he liked it or not.
Boyd would like it, though, and take advantage right back, trading favors and blackmail for what he wanted. Whatever that was: protection, cigarettes, regular breeding; if it was in Tim's power, he'd get it for him, just to get to keep taking him from behind.
It was a bad sign that it was the thought of being blackmailed that got Tim to come, right?
Jesus Christ, he was so fucked.

"So, what was he like?"
"You know him."
"Sure, but what was he like when he was with you?"
"You say that like we were girlfriend-boyfriend."
"I am devastated to hear that you were not."
"Great, whatever. He was a pain in my ass."
"Oh?"
"He's just a man, Boyd."
"Lotsa kinds of men."
"An angry one."
"What's he angry about? His daddy? Me?"
"I think it's more a symptom of his PTSD than anything personal, sorry."
"What?"
"What?"
"Raylan doesn't have PTSD."
"I'm not gonna go through the checklist with you, but trust me. He does."
"From what? The mine?"
"Hey, you remember how he lived around twenty years away from this place? Bad things happen elsewhere, too."
"So you don't know."
"Of course I know."
"Well?"
"Yeah, I'm not sharing the worst event in his life with you without his permission."
"And I'm supposed to believe he intentionally shared it with you?"
"Hey, I thought we were boyfriend-girlfriend and all that."
"I think the defining feature of all his relationships was his 'lack of emotional availability.'"
"Maybe it was different with me."
"Sure, son. You're the sort of person who inspires emotional intimacy."
"Fine. I read his file."
"Ah, that's the Tim I know and adore."
"You don't know me."
"You don't deny my affection, though."
"A wolf can love its zookeeper. Zookeeper don't give a shit."
**
"You ever feel abandoned, Deputy?"
"No."
"Truly? With our mutual friend off in Florida without so much as a thank you, your boss retired to Georgia, and your favorite coworker accepting a Chief position in the mystical land of Seattle, you don't feel even a little bit left behind?"
"Wow. Gossip's good in federal prison."
"I have my ways."
"You getting some other visitor coming in here? Might make a girl feel jealous."
"Just my lovely attorney."
"Oh, yeah? She's given up on appeals and is just playing 'Keeping Up with the Marshals' these days?"
"There's a question before the court, Deputy."
"Asked and answered, counselor."
"Oh! Someone pays attention when called to testify!"
"I did Mock Trial in high school."
"Well, wonders never cease! Why didn't you pursue that line of work, I must ask?"
"Lawyers rarely get to shoot people."
