Chapter 1: I'll pay for it

Chapter Text

I’ll pay for it

“I’ll pay for it,” she heard him say as he tried to reach the wound on his back, she didn’t know how to respond.

About half an hour later Jack took the bag meant for Mr.Diaz  as he ordered the doordash.

“While we're at it,” he said, “do you want anything for lunch?”

Samaria felt herself start to blush, she didn’t feel like she could accept his offer.

“No,” she said, "I'm fine.”

“I’ll order extra,” he said, “just in case.”

Later in the chaos of the hospital going analog Samira had wished she’d taken Jack's offer, she could feel her stomach rumbling. In a free moment she found her way  to the break room where Jack was eating a sandwich and drinking a coke.

“Hey,” he said, "I'm glad you found me, I don’t know what you usually eat but I got you a chicken parm sub.”

“Thanks,” she said, “really.”

He handed it to her and they sat in silence as they ate. She didn’t see Jack again until her shift was over, he walked towards her with his bag already slung over his shoulders.

“So,” he said, “are you going to any fourth of july parties?”

“No,” she said, “you?”

“No,” he said, “but I was wondering if you maybe wanted to come to my place for a bit. I hate being alone during the fireworks shows.”

She could see something behind his eyes and she knew he really didn’t want to be alone.

“Yeah,” she said, “would you mind giving me a ride? I usually walk to work.”

“Do you want to stop by your place to clean up first?” he asked.

She thought about her apartment for a moment, she figured it was clean enough for Jack to see it.

“Yeah.” She said, “That sounds like a good idea.”

As she followed him to his car Samira could feel the heat coming off his body.

Five minutes later they were at her apartment and he was sitting on her couch as she went to change.

“Grab a bathing suit if you want,” he said, “my place has a pool.”

She started to wonder how much his rent was every month, she paid just about $1,500 a month for a shoebox.

She threw a pair of pajamas, a change of clothes and a bathing suit into her backpack before heading back out into the living room. Jack had made himself at home on her ratty sofa.

“Ready to go?” he asked.

She nodded and followed him outside.

She had fully been expecting him to pull up in front of an apartment complex, instead he pulled up to a brick house.

“You live here?” she asked, “how much is the rent?”

“Mortgage?” he said, “paid off five years ago, my wife and I bought it a while back.”

She felt bad for asking, she knew he had lost his wife a few years ago.

She followed him out of the car and watched the muscles in his arms as he unlocked the door and held it open for  her, a chocolate labrador came bounding towards Jack.

“This,” he said, “is Cocoa, she’s a sweetie.”

Samira knew this would be an interesting night.
