Chapter 1: First impressions

Chapter Text

Jiyong didn’t expect this semester to start off so badly.

Not breaking up with his stupid boyfriend or getting stalked by him after. He groaned out loud as he rolled around in his bed, burrito’d in his duvet. Not even crying his eyes out everynight to his bestfriend Chaerin after his ex cheated on him.

He looked at his phone that was running a call with his friends while he whined about his life. Daesung was laughing at his dilemma while Youngbae was silent.

“This isn’t funny! I’m serious, we need a plan- Not a real boyfriend just a stand in is fine!” Jiyong whined and sat up, the sheets still wrapped around him.

“No, you need to figure something out Ji. Maybe something that doesn't involve hooking up with someone?” Jiyong scoffed but he had to at least consider it, afterall Youngbae was the only one of the group who had a long lasting relationship. Screw their happy love lives.

“It’s not like that! Really I just need someone to be my pretend boyfriend for a bit, do you know how many numbers I’ve blocked just this year” Jiyong trailed off, his argument sounding a bit sad now when Daesung chimed in, “Like 20 right? Youngbae hyung, Maybe it’s not such a bad idea, even if it’s depressing.”

Jiyong could feel Youngbae rolling his eyes from behind the screen at their suggestion. Like renting a boyfriend was the worst thing he could do. His first option was to go drown himself in soju and move to a remote island. Change his name to something cool.

Jiyong perked up but instead of being met with his friends praising him for his beautiful mind and intelligence Youngbae muttered some excuse about Hyorin calling and hung up. So did Daesung not even seconds after, saying he needed to get to class.

“Traitors..” He muttered at his now blank screen before getting out of bed, finally getting a good look at himself for the morning. His eyes were puffy from crying and his blonde hair was sticking up in every direction. Note to self, don’t dye your hair just because of breakup. Jiyong ran his fingers through his hair until it calmed down, grabbing the first outfit he could get his hands on in his overcrowded closet.

Jiyong dragged his feet on his way to campus, trying to get as quickly as he could into the dance room without being spotted. The sun felt too bright in the autumn and everyone seemed too happy. Ugh, couldn't they hide their happiness until he was out of the area?

When he got there, he didn’t expect to see the lights already on and someone standing there talking to Youngbae. A very handsome someone.

He was tall, with a funky buzzcut. His jaw was sharp, not to mention those eyes..

Jiyong stepped forward after gawking at the stranger for a moment, clearing his throat to make his presence known. “Hello?” Instead of greeting him like a normal person, the guy practically ran out of room like he had the plague after giving Youngbae some cash.

“Was he a drug dealer or something? So damn rude..” Youngbae snorted at Jiyong's question and shook his head. “He’s a friend of mine, c’mon lets start this routine”

He didn't budge though. He stared at Youngbae until the other could feel his gaze burning a hole through him. Finally Youngbae let up with an exasperated sigh, tossing a towel at Jiyongs face. "He's my very straight friend who borrowed some money from me okay?"

Jiyong gave him a suspicious look but shrugged it off. He’d met enough assholes this year anyways.

He felt his phone buzz a couple times, no surprise, it was Daesung again. His eyes widened at the message.

‘Would you pay?? For the fake boyfriend thing?’

Jiyong stared at the text for a long time. His pride was really going to the dogs lately thanks to his shitty choices in boyfriends.

‘Yes, but not if it's u’

He watched the text bubble show up and disappear a couple times before Daesungs activity status went to offline.
