Beyond to Eternity: Accession of Realms (Third Sequel)

Chapter 72: Atone Seto Kaiba

Summary:

Yugi makes an unexpected trip to Domino City as he asks for Seto Kaiba to atone

Chapter Text

The Residence: Luxury Mental Health Facility in London Revealed

The sterile air of the Domino City Psychiatric Facility clung to Seto Kaiba like a shroud, a stark contrast to the luxurious, commanding presence he once exuded. Room 405, a private sanctuary meant to offer solace, felt more like a gilded cage. Here, the former CEO of KaibaCorp, the world-renowned duelist and technological visionary, was reduced to a shaking, mumbling shadow.

His side, neatly bandaged, was merely a testament to the fact that Anzu Mazaki’s rage, while potent, had not been fatal. The wound was superficial, a physical echo of a far deeper, spiritual laceration. What truly held Seto captive was the aftermath of his encounter with Pharoah Atem. Fed to Ammit, the devourer of souls, Seto Kaiba had been broken, his mind fractured into a thousand shimmering shards, his once sharp intellect dulled to a vacant stupor.

He sat up from laying down the edge of his bed, swaying slightly, his icy blue eyes staring at nothing. The signature smirk, the arrogant tilt of his head, the restless energy that had always defined him – all were gone. Replaced by a trembling vulnerability. Only when Mokuba, his younger brother, entered the room, did a flicker of recognition cross his face. "Mokuba," he mouthed, the name a faint whisper, barely audible, a ghost of the booming voice it once was. He couldn't form sentences, couldn't articulate the complex emotions swimming just beneath the surface of his fractured consciousness. Mokuba, the one constant in his turbulent life, was there, but the Seto he knew, the brother who had taught him chess and battled the world for their future, was lost in the labyrinth of his own mind.

Mokuba watched him, a knot of worry tightening in his gut. His brother, a chess prodigy, a dueling champion, now a mere echo. Was this it? Was this Kaiba's future, a lifetime spent in institutions, a shell of the man he once was? The thought was a bitter bile in his throat. He thought of KaibaCorp, now under the temporary custodianship of Industrial Illusions – a necessary evil, given Seto’s condition, but a humiliating one for the Kaiba name. He thought of his own future, tethered to this broken man, and the immense weight of responsibility that pressed down on his young shoulders.

He couldn't stand it any longer. With a heavy sigh, Mokuba excused himself from the room, the sympathetic nurse nodding understandingly. Outside, the autumn air was crisp, but it didn't clear his head. He pulled out a cigarette, the familiar ritual a small comfort in a world gone mad. He lit it, inhaling deeply, the smoke burning his lungs but momentarily dulling the ache in his heart.

His mind drifted, yearning for simpler times, for the vibrant, challenging Seto who had built an empire from nothing, who had always protected him, no matter the cost. He remembered their late-night duels, the shared ambition, the unspoken bond that had seen them through a harsh orphanage and a colder world.

"Mokuba?"

The voice was soft, familiar, yet startlingly out of place. He turned, the cigarette forgotten between his fingers. Standing a few feet away, bathed in the pale afternoon sun, was Yugi Muto, accompanied by an imposing, man with piercing eyes – Mr. Fodi.

Mokuba’s jaw dropped. Yugi. Here. In Domino. He hadn't expected to see him again, not after... everything. A wave of relief, longing, and a touch of anger he couldn't quite place, washed over him. He ran, throwing his arms around Yugi in an uncharacteristic embrace.

"Yugi! I… I didn’t expect to see you here! In Domino!"

Yugi returned the hug gently, a sad smile on his face. "Nor have I, Mokuba. But I wanted to return back here. It felt like the right thing to do."

"What do you mean?" Mokuba pulled back, still holding Yugi at arm's length, scanning his face. There was a new gravitas to Yugi, a quiet strength that hadn't been there before, a subtle shift in his very aura.

"I need to find a way to heal for myself," Yugi explained, his gaze thoughtful. "And one of the steps is to move forward. I needed to let go of everything I endured in Domino City before I move onto the next chapter in my life."

Mokuba still looked bewildered. "More clarification, please."

Yugi sighed, the weight of his words palpable. "I need to try to make Anzu see the light. And with Kaiba, to atone for what he has done. I cannot move onto the next chapter of my life, becoming Atem's husband, if we cannot let go of the past. It is the best way, and also a way for me to say goodbye to Domino City."

Mokuba's eyes widened. "Say goodbye? What do you mean?"

"I don't intend to live in Domino City anymore," Yugi stated, his voice firm. "I will permanently move to South America and hold a residence in Egypt. I cannot see myself living in Domino. My future will be with Atem, and that new future will involve Egypt. The last goal I intend to do before moving on is releasing the new game and giving the game shop to Joey until Grandpa returns from completing his expedition."

Mokuba felt a pang of sadness. "I understand. But… I don't want to see you leave."

"It's for the best," Yugi reassured him. "I am not the same man I was. I will soon become part of a new world and a new life. Moving forward from the old life starts by seeing both Seto and Anzu."

Mokuba nodded slowly, the reality sinking in. "Seto Kaiba is currently in the facility," he said, his voice dropping. "But his outlook is grim. If he is mentally incompetent, then he will be permanently staying in this facility, or another in Switzerland. If need be, I'm willing to have him stay in Switzerland for his privacy."

"It would be best if he is not better," Yugi said, his gaze distant, "and that you, Mokuba, focus on yourself."

"I'm trying," Mokuba admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But it's difficult when you love your brother. I know he’s a piece of shit, but… I love him."

"I understand," Yugi said softly.

Mr. Fodi, who had been observing silently until now, stepped forward. "My young lord and I won't stay in Domino City for long, Mokuba. We are here to do what needs to be done, and then we leave. I am here to make sure Seto Kaiba does not try anything with my young lord, and that he is safe. Right now, all that matters is him and the goal." His voice held an ancient authority that sent a shiver down Mokuba’s spine.

"I understand," Mokuba repeated, feeling the weight of the divine presence beside them.

The three men walked into the psychiatric facility, the subdued lighting and hushed whispers a stark contrast to the vibrant world outside. They approached Room 405. The door was ajar, and inside, a nurse was gently fixing Seto Kaiba’s food, indicating lunch was approaching.

Seto Kaiba, still a shell of his former self, looked up as they entered. His eyes, vacant and icy blue, found Mokuba. "Mokuba," he rasped, a little stronger this time.

"Seto," Mokuba greeted him, his voice heavy with emotion.

Yugi stepped closer, his gaze fixed on Kaiba. The sight was jarring, a stark reminder of Atem’s judgment. The mighty, arrogant intellect, the man who had always been so meticulously in control, now as feeble as a child. This was Atem's punishment for daring to split them apart, for brainwashing Yugi with a love spell, for trying to force himself onto Yugi in his deluded state. Yet, as Yugi looked upon the broken man, he felt a complex mix of emotions. There was no overwhelming remorse, which was uncharacteristic of him, but there was also a profound understanding that for his own healing, for his own future, this was the moment to forgive. And to see if Kaiba could, somehow, atone.

Mr. Fodi, ever vigilant, placed a reassuring arm over Yugi’s shoulder. "Are you alright, my lord?" he asked, his eyes never leaving Seto Kaiba.

"I'm fine," Yugi replied, his voice a little strained. "It's just surreal to see someone you've known for so long act so differently."

"It is part of the judgments," Mr. Fodi said, his voice low. "As my sister Ammit eats at his soul."

Yugi paused, considering. "Is it… is it okay for Ammit to stop right now?"

Mr. Fodi frowned, his brow furrowing. "The Grandeur wants him to suffer, my lord. I do not wish for Ammit to cease."

"I understand," Yugi said, "but for at least five minutes, can Ammit spare him? Let me reach out to him."

"My brother will not like this," Mr. Fodi warned, a hint of steel in his tone.

"He will understand," Yugi insisted, his eyes sparkling with a subtle, golden light.

With a deep breath, Mr. Fodi closed his eyes, his form radiating a faint, warm glow. Using his powers as an Egyptian god, a divine consort in his own right, his eyes lit golden. He mentally communicated with Ammit, the crocodile-lion-hippopotamus demon currently feasting on Kaiba's soul.

Sister, he projected, his thought clear and resonant, It is Horus, the Divine Consort of the Divine Grandeur, ask that you cease your torture for a mere five minutes.

Ammit, ancient and fearsome, responded immediately, her mental voice a guttural purr that resonated through Mr. Fodi's being. I will never turn down the request of the Divine Consort. As you wish, brother.

The oppressive weight within the room, an almost palpable sense of dread, lifted. Seto Kaiba, who had been trembling subtly, stilled. His vacant icy blue eyes slowly, almost imperceptibly, gained a spark of life. The ghastly pallor of his skin softened, a faint flush of color returning. He looked around, blinking, as if waking from a long, terrible dream. His gaze landed on Mokuba.

"Mokuba!" Seto Kaiba exclaimed, his voice rough, but almost like his old self.

"Seto!" Mokuba rushed forward, tears welling in his eyes.

Yugi walked closer, his presence drawing Seto’s attention. Seto Kaiba’s eyes, now alarmingly lucid, widened.

"Yu-Yu-Yugi," he stammered, his mind struggling to process the sight.

"Hello, Kaiba," Yugi said, his voice devoid of his usual warmth, almost clinical. Mr. Fodi stood directly behind him, a fortress of protection, his eyes like daggers fixed on Seto Kaiba.

"What are you…?" Seto Kaiba began, his voice gaining a flicker of its old arrogance, though still tinged with confusion.

"Doing here?" Yugi finished for him, his tone blunt and unyielding. "Quite frankly, Kaiba, I am wasting my time being here. You being here and broken as you are is what you deserve. You are a terrible person, Kaiba. I gave you chances to believe you would change, but you cannot change. Your greed, your ambition, and your arrogance brought you here. A shell of a man who has nothing. When I say nothing, I mean everything you took pride in – your money, your fortune, your status, your reputation – is gone."

He met Kaiba's bewildered gaze without flinching. "The only thing keeping you from going to jail is staying in this facility. Kaiba, you do not understand the trouble you brought to yourself. You are a wanted, disliked man in this town, and they are ready to send you to jail. And I won't be here to aid you or help you. The only thing I can do is pray for your soul and hope that you atone. If you atone, then hopefully, your outcome will change. But right now, it will get worse before it gets better."

Yugi’s voice softened slightly, a hint of his old compassion breaking through, but it was a cold, distant compassion, born of necessity, not affection. "I will never forget what you did to me and to Atem. But for me to move forward, and for us to possibly reach a better place, I will need to forgive you in order to forgive myself. As painful as it sounds, I forgive you, Kaiba. And I pray that you find peace for yourself."

Seto Kaiba stared, utterly shocked. The words, delivered with such cold, divine authority, struck him deeper than any blow. His mind, though briefly cleared by Yugi’s intervention, was still too fragile to mount a defense. He saw the truth in Yugi's eyes, the unyielding power of the Divine Consort, the lover of a living God. He, Seto Kaiba, the man who had always sought power, was utterly powerless before him.

Yugi looked at Seto Kaiba one last time, a silent acknowledgment of the end of an era, of their twisted rivalry, of the last lingering thread that bound them. Then, he turned and walked out of the room, Mr. Fodi following close behind, his watchful eyes sweeping the room one last time before he, too, departed.

As the door clicked shut, the brief respite Yugi had provided evaporated. The air in Room 405 grew heavy once more. Seto Kaiba’s eyes, which had held a flicker of life, slowly glazed over, returning to their vacant, icy blue. Ammit, no longer bound by the Consort’s request, began to salivate again, her unseen maw once more descending upon the soul of Seto Kaiba. He trembled, a soft, pathetic whimper escaping his lips, a broken man left to face his long, agonizing atonement. Mokuba, witnessing the rapid relapse, could only stand there, tears streaming down his face, his heart shattering for the brother he both loved and loathed.
